I dont know about the w140's but my w126 had a pair of stereo amps (one for each side of the car) behind the rear seat back. One of them failed and I experienced the same exact problem as you. I think the w140's stereo amps are in the trunk though.

That might be the first place to look.

Take care,

George

The 92 S class was equipped with a "Bose" system. Font is only the control and cassette, the tuner is in the trunk at the base of the rear wheel, the failure prone 7 channel 11 speaker amp sits a little higher up. The front is routed thru a large din thru the CD and back to the tuner. The tuner has a two channel output and is fed to the "Bose", the front to rear is handled by the fader on the console, and right to left by the front controls.
There are four speakers on the rear deck in pairs, the front doors both have two, the rear doors one each, and a tweeter behind the rear viw mirror. The speakers at the ends of the dash were only used for the CellTell and get no audio. The system changed in 94/95 to a different one piece radio and amp.

Peter i am waking this old thread up to ask if anyone knows if the speakers are a common problem that cause these amps to fail? i have used after market stuff for years and have a nice home entertainment center that i put together, this was the warning that came with a used amp for the above car.

Peter,

Aftermarket speakers could definitely cause the OEM MB bose amplifier to fail. The bose amplifier uses a somewhat proprietary design, in terms of the impedance of the speakers it is designed to drive. Most bose systems use 2ohm speakers, to basically take advantage of ohm's law, and achieve louder spl levels from lower power amplifiers. The sacrifice of course is increased distortion, but at general levels this is still acceptable. What I would do is test the OEM bose speakers using a mulitimeter to determine their impedance. Once you have established the impedance of the stock drivers, if you wish to retain the bose amplifier you must match the impedance in the aftermarket speakers of your choice. The key to suitable replacements here is thinking outside the box and looking at raw drivers rather than standard aftermarket car audio replacement speakers which are available in much wider impedance ranges than conventional car audio speakers which are pretty much standardized at 4ohms.

Take care,

George

Bose 7-Channel W-140 Amplifier

The Bose W-140 amplifier has almost seen it's days. We have serviced them for over 6 years now and have not had one come back due to any electronic failure. We are very strict on the repair standards and have found improvements to bring out the best in these amplifiers. When these amplifiers are working well the car sounds fantastic. The cars are getting older and therefore spending a large amount of money to fix the sound system is hard to justify. I can only say that if you want to keep the car original then fix it. This would be the least expencive way to solve the problem. Just be cautious on where you get it repaired. Reputation is very important and price should not be the main concideration. Spend wisely not cheaply. Thank you for using Mercedes Shop Forum.
