Replacing w140 speakers?
Ok after about 4 days of having my car (92 s600) I finally figured out that it looks like 2 of my speakers are out ( front drivers dash, and rear passenger door speakers) so now I'm wondering first, should I take the car to a reputable stereo shop and have them listen to it and tell me what they think? Next should I replace those 2 speakers with aftermarket speakers? Should i replace all 11 speakers?
Sidenote: Im definitely looking for best sound and seen a few people put some after market speakers in there and be very happy, I have also heard that the bose amp in this car causes problems, but would that cause only 2 or so speakers not to play ( actually plays but shuts off at various times) I figure I could probably replace 2 speakers with aftermarket speakers and labor for about 200-300 bucks?? So any advice would be greatly appreciated. |

The cant be replaced with aftermarket because #1-Bose speakers are rated at 2ohm and aftermarket are 4-8 so plugging them in eitheir damage the aftermarket speaker or the bose system.
#2 The bose speakers in there now are designed for the specific vehicle they are in.

so what would you recomend? Buying 2 bose speakers that fit this system and then taking them someone and getting installed?
i could of swore that I read various threads of people replacing speakers only ( aftermarket) and still using the bose system? |

I would check the Bose amp this is mostlikely your problem. The Bose speakers dont really blow up or anything...they are "actively controlled"...meaning the amp controls the bass levels for non-distortion/damage.

After reading a few things on here I wondered if it was the bose amp, but theres one speaker not playing on drivers (left) dash and one at least not playing from passenger(right) back seat. Would the amp make some speakers work and some on opposite side not work?
Or from what Im reading it sounds like theres 7 amps or something like that? And maybe 2 of them could be bad thus causing these speakers on different sides not to work? Oh also every once in a while after bumps or wahtever the speakers will turn on and off thus working sometimes and not, even then I dont like the sound of the speakers even at time that these speakers are working for how ever few mins they last. If the amp is the problem how much and where can i replace these 2 problem speakers/ amps? |

The amp will do this if faulty. ONCE again....the dash speakers are not for the audio system! Optional phone only!

HMMM so the crackling and the occasional song that i hear from the dash speaker isnt used for listening to the stereo? It sounds like its the amp.
So where would you recomend taking this amp to get checked out and fixed if in fact it is the problem? I live in the bay area california any idea of places around here and how much it would cost to repair the amp that sounds like 2 or 3 speakers arent working? |

To get at the amp you must remove the fender lining on drivers side trunk, remove the little centers on the plugs you find, and pull out the rivets. I suggest you remove the tail lamps, slide the lock over the plug will come off and carefully remove, they are on pivots. The liner can be pulled out of the fender gently. The "amp" sits on top of the rear wheel and has some screws holding it in the bracket, the plug also pivots into it. while you are in there you should see remnants of the cellular Phone it has a splitter from the power antenna going to it. At the base of the rear wheel you will see the tuner it has a large din coming from the front. If you have the CD you will have to remove it to get the fender liner out, and the "din" from the front is routed thru it and back to the tuner. I would put the tail lamp housing back, leave the liner out, and save all those rivets and plugs.
By the way, your closing assist pump sits up there also next to the gas tank, it controls the draw down of the trunk and draw in of the doors. To get to it you also should pull the liner on the gas tank (it is a common fault) you might enjuy Bret http://v12uberalles.com/ |

Wow sounds pretty difficult. Is there any way I can swap this amp out for another and keep everything else the same.

It is not that difficult, I dont know of ayone who is doing exchange. I just wanted you to know step by step, so nothing gets broken. Take it out and send it off or have some audio shop do it for you, or find one that can. The fixing part is the hard part!

Hmmm so it looks like I have two options,
1) take it out myself ( which im not good with audio at all) 2) have some shop uninstall it (probably 100-200 bucks) then send it in to get it fixed.(200-400 bucks) then another person to install it when I get it back (100-200 bucks) is there no way at all I can just install another amp and have this system work? |

Fixing the amp is the best option and least hassle than rewiring a car for mediocre sound in the end.
Give it a try yourself...dont give up. ![]()

I dont think you guys understand Im horrible with audio stuff, absolutely horrible and illiterate when it comes to that. If I got this amp replaced I was going to have a shop un-install it and give it to me so i can send it off and then have a shop re-install it after I got it back from being fixed.
So that really limits me to what i can do. I would love to be able to take my car to a place that would un-install it and fix it but it doesnt seem like theres any place to do it??? If I'm going to for sure change the amp what would you guys suggest I do since im doing none of the work? |
