After market radio install
The after market radio (Jensen with DVD player and 7" screen) in my '97 SL320 doesn't seem to be working properly. It acts like it's losing the memory whenever the ignition is shut off, but not all the time. Also it takes about 20-30 seconds after the car is started for the radio to come on. Looking at the Crutchfield site for some information, they don't list any installation information for a Jensen radio, however while looking at an Alpine they mention that the yellow ignition wire and the red always hot wire should be reversed for proper operation. Sounds like this may be the problem. Any insight into this would be appreciated.

Well if the two wires were reversed then the radio would stay on. The wiring harness colors are universal so the Alpine should be the same as the Jensen. The red is is the ignition wire it has power when the car is turned on. the yellow wire is the memory this should have a wire that is always hot. maybe that wire isn't always hot or it just has a loose connection. You can always run a 16 gauge wire from the battery with a fuse and run it to the yellow wire on the headunit and this will work.

The yellow wire on the radio is for the ignition and the red is for continous 12v. so they should be reversed to match the correct function of the car harness

Dont draw radio power from anything except the proper radio harness with an adapter... Please dont hack ur car for a radio, if it isnt already, please keep it that way. My guess is that your memory wire has a bad connection, or it's acually a switched connection. Most radios take about that time to power up after having no power.
Did you use an adapter or did you hack and splice? Also, did you solder or crimp? I hate crimp connections, ESPECIALLY thoose damn vampire ones, they really kill wires... Have fun, I hate electrical problems but that one shouldnt be too hard... ~Nate

OK, the radio was in the car when I bought it. I got a chance to pull it out and look behind it. Looks like whomever installed it used an adapter plug to plug into the original harness, so no hacked wires. The radio wires are soldered to the adapter wires as I would have done. Next time I'll have to take my meter out and read the hot and switched wires. Thanks
