I was wondering what kind of watt ect. amp will i need? http://www.jcwhitney.com/product.jhtml?CATID=5104&BQ=jcw2 is what i have been looking at because of the price. What do you think the amount of out put will be? The head unit is a sony cd player 35x4 looks like it is a pretty good unit. THanks |

The quality of the amp you chose will have a enormous effect on your end result. Amp power ratings are often confusing. The number to pay attention to is the RMS power, not the peak power. It also helps to discover at what input voltage this power is made as an amp that lists 400 watts at 13.2 volts will be louder than a amp that lists 400 watts at 14.4 volts. Clarify if you could, the details of the voice coils. Subs with dual voice coils can be wired for different amounts of resistance. Ideally, you could wire the two subs with dual voice coils into an arrangement that results in a 2 ohm load. Then you could purchase a high quality amp that is stable to 2 ohms and I suspect your results would be excellent. I've had excellent results with a Arc Audio 2050cxl that puts out 250 watts mono to a single 10" IDQ single voice coil 4 ohm sub. This amp is 2 ohm stable as well. I found it used for $160 shipped, but there are other brands that could be found for less. MTX is another brand of amp that can be found at reasonable prices used. I've had great luck buying a high quality used amp rather than a new low end amp that costs the same money.

I've had better luck with name brand amps. I did a quick search on eBay and found this, there ought to be many more like it.

Dan,
Don't worry so much about wattage-you can go to GrandAuto (or similar stores) and find a 1000 watt amp for under $200.00. Don't expect it to perform like a 100 watt amp that costs $500.00. There is no standard for rating wattage in amps. As long as a manufacturer can reach a wattage amount in tests (even if it is for .001 miliseconds, and the amp bursts into flames afterwards) they can advertise it as a wattage rating. Stick with known brands, lower ratings are actually more accurate. I am running two JL 12" subs with an Alpine V12 75x2 amp. I can't get the amp level above 4 (out of 10) without blowing my trunk lid off the car. For my money Alpine V12 or MTX (not Road Thunder series) are the best amps out there. Justin |

Speaking of amps...
My '90 300 E Becker system w/6 speakers seems to have some type of amp or equalizer in the trunk that I noticed the other day.
I don't know the specifics of this system really, because the car was handed down to me. Anyone know if this is indeed an amp, and if so what is its output... Thanks! ~Paul |

Justin is right. Try to stick with brand name amps. Decide on what your budget is, and the go from there. By rule of thumb, you'll be paying $1 for every watt. MTX, Alpine and pioneer are a few brands that are reputable. Even tho they cost a bit more ( sometimes a lot more), you will begin to see that the extra cost is worth it. Since your goal is to achieve about 600-700 watts, consider reputable brands. Lower end amps tend to give you problems such as overheating and shutting down, or even melting down. ( Litterly)
Another point is that if bite the bullet and spend a good amount of money on an amp, you'll save yourself the hassle of replacing lower-end amps and putting up with their problems, meanwhile getting nice sounds out of it. I've been through that path already, and I've own at least 6 amps. Save your money and buy the best you can. Vu |

I originally bought a brand name cheap amp. I took it out. I then bought an MTX 250 thunder series. I love it. It is clean on frequency separation and drives the two 8" 3000 series just fine, thank you. No detectable unwanted noise. FWIW.
