Becker 980 CD Changer Repair (HELP!) With pictures.

Ok so I just bought this unit and it was working absolutely perfectly....for the first day.

Both these threads describe the same symptoms that my unit is doing

Becker Silvrestone Advice
Mercedes Becker Silverstone 980 cd changer problem

However i'm stuck on where exactly this loose gear is located. I've opened the unit and looked inside but I don't hear any rattling gear or see where it would sit. Any ideas?

Having these folks go thru that 20 year old changer might be the best idea.

Looked into that already...they state that they will no longer service this unit.

Bummer, I see

...I have the same unit in my 500E and they repaired mine in the summer of 2008....I wonder why they won't fix them now? Not good.

I'll give them a call and see if something can be arranged but only if I don't get answer on this board about where exactly this worm gear is located.

How much did Becker charge you for your repair? Was it doing the same thing as mine?

Guess that means I can count on pretty ridiculous then.....not to mention the cost of shipping a unit that weighs as much as a main battle tank.

My repair was only $100 ( I dropped it off and picked it up in person though when I was in NJ for work)

....my unit was hung up and would not spit out the CD cartridge...turned out that a few of the blue sliding 'teeth' on the CD cartridge broke off inside...that was it, $45 for the new CD holder from MB (who sharpie penned over the SONY logo on it for some reason) But that $100 got me a tune-up and cleaning that I could never do on my own.

Hopefully, they can't be the only place to service this kind of unit. Try searching for 'SW Stereo'...they service european car radios I know. I bought parts from them for a Porsche radio recently....and they advertise in the STAR and PANORAMA.

The magazines are exactly the same as the 10 disc Sony units. Cruthfield no longer sells them but you can find new ones easily enough (Ebay etc) I'm really hoping to be able to fix this myself as it can be done...I just need to know where to start/what the general procedure is. Spending money to fix it will be a last resort
