Welcome!

As you will soon discover, getting audiophile sound in a 124 is very difficult. Some say impossible. Some issues are: the stock dash location offers poor midrange imaging. Really only suitable for tweeters. That means you'll need speakers in the doors. The doors are not very deep, so you'll be limited as to type and size of speaker you install, unless you build a new door panel. Speakers in custom kickpanels are difficult because of the location of the parking brake pedal. The fuel tank is behind the rear seat backrest making it difficult to get subwoofer frequencies from the trunk into the main cabin.

Probably the best setup I've seen (in photo's only, although mine was configured similarily for a time) is Michaels. 2-way Boston components, 6's up high in the doors, tweets in the dash and a sub mounted in the spare tire wheelwell.

I'm suspect he'll respond in depth if he sees this post.

Good luck!

Gebhard

Here's the link for the door speakers:

Here's another good thread:

500E Stereo upgrade

Use the search function as there is tons of information on this forum on the very subject.

Good Luck!

Pictures from both my '88 300TE (white/blue interior) and my 500E (Almandine Red/Black) are posted there. AS regards your car, the 300TE front speaker placements are relevant.

To do so, I strongly recommend you start by making a smallish hole, then going bigger by increments-you don't want to interfere with any of the window-lift mechanicals

Gebhard-thanks for the kind words it took me a LOT of time to do those installs! Consequently, my '92 300D is bone stock!

This will probably cost considerably more, but it does give it a STOCK look. Even my wife thought they came from the factory this way.

This is in our 1988 360TE AMG wagon.

ke6dcj - more info on door panels?

ke6dcj - Your install looks great. Were these door panels standard on the AMG or were they something you upgraded? If so, where did you get the parts (later model?)

Regards,
Mike.

These are STOCK door panels, modified/custom made using fiberglass, bondo, and circular fiberboard speaker enclosure, covered with MB Tex from World Upholstry in Oxnard, CA.

Neil - Very nice work. And the wood trim? Original or custom (source?)? My 89 doesn't have the wood.

Wood is a custom accessory that came with the car, so I don't know the maker.

I believe Peformance Products has the wood trim kit which covers the dash and doors.
