Having just installed an NHT 1259 12" sub in the trunk of my 500E, appeared to work fine until the amp blew up New one on the way, should be in tomorrow

However, upon testing all of the speakers' resistances (front both 3.1 ohms, rears 2.8) I found the sub tested at 0.00, or nothing. However, the sub passed a continuity test from terminal to terminal. And I think it smells a bit, but that could be lingering from the cooked amp (Precision Power PowerClass 4100: (2 X 100 Watts + 1 X 400)

Is it cooked? Please advise.

In a word...yeah, its cooked. You'll most likely find the amp went DC (which they do when the go pop) and literally cooked the voicecoil...

Basically the cone was held in place with a DC current, and no movement meant the coil got *HOT*.

Talk to PPI, ask them to chop $150 off the price and get a new NHT..

<Waynes World> Keep the faith my friend. Do the install, and the sound WILL come. </Waynes World>

Glad I was able to shed light on this topic for the Forum

Now I'm having REAL fun...I'll post my result, but I'll likely (get PPI to) buy another NHT as well as see if they'll send me one of their subs for comparison!

Looks like the NHT was bad after all...amp's fine, and mightily driving the loaner sub box I have until the new NHT arrives!

Not to be too cynical....*BUT*

If one of your products had blown up and taken someones sub out with it... would you:

a) Admit it was at fult, stump up the cash for the sub, replace the amp, and still have a bad rep

OR

b) Repair amp, deny it was faulty and return it?

As I said, not accusing anybody, just.... mixing it up.

You never know, but the thought crossed my mind, especially when they denied the fan was loud...it was unreal I assure you, a real screamer.

But I now have a nice set of cool running amps, a loaner sub I'm beating senseless (I can't believe a Kicker 10" can take 400 watts of abuse ; I think it's rated for 250.

Replacement NHT gets in tomorrow I hope, so we'll just see if this is everything it'd cracked up to be
