swapped 4" with 6 1/2" for 190
What to do on a friday night. Fiancee is with mom, friends already
scattered on their own missions....hmmm... Well, after giving my baby 190 cossy a fresh blood supply of oil and a filter, I wondered how I could improve her. Then I remembered that I have a new pair of kenwood 6 1/2" that I recently took out from my deceased 300 TD. WoW! I did not believe they would be so easy to install, I didn't even really expect them to fit! In 40 min. I had an impressive dynamic and base gain from throwing the puppies in. I took out the port enclosures that were set for the little 4" wizzers. The speakers are almost completely flush on the back side on the baffle board, it's honestly minimal. So with this I checked out the fronts to possibly put in a pair of 3 1/2" Inf. Kappas (yeah, I hold on to everything when it comes to audio), but they were to small so I'll probably purchase a pair of 4" polks down the road. Anyway, I remember reading that 5 1/4" were pretty much the limit for the back speakers of a 190e without much work, wrong. fusion |

4 inch components in the front
Fusion,
I'm glad to hear that your were brave enough to give 6 1/2 's a chance in the rear deck of your 190e. I was told the same thing about the 5 1/2's being the max for the rear deck so I installed a pair of Kenwood 5 1/2 DB coaxals. Very good speakers by the way. Not a audiophile per say but at that time looking for even "better" sound so I purchased a pair of 5 1/2 inch MB Quartz RKC 113's. Being the same size as the Kenwood's I thought that they would pop right in their cut out. Wrong! After allowing for the speaker mounting ring, the holes I ended up cutting out to mount the Quartzs would easily fit most any 6 1/2 inch speaker! In some instances the holes are now too big for some 6 1/2's. To boot, I liked the Kenwoods better. The Quartzs are less efficient and more money. I can't hear the difference. Oh yea, the fronts. I installed Polk 4 inch ES components. Woofers fit nicely in the dash, just cut off the 2 mounting tabs you don't need and I mounted the tweeters in the sail panels of the door. Nice imaging. That's my experience so far.

Nice setup!
Yeah, I did hear alot of good things about Polk, I am suprised about the MB Quartz!? I did try to keep the factory port/holders that were in the back deck for when I put in the 6 1/2", but it wouldn't work. Do you know anything about a subwoofer setup in the space of the first-aid kit? |

Subwoofer setup in 190e first aid cut out
I have a 10 inch Infinity Perfect subwoofer in a properly sized truck sub box. These boxes are designed to fit behind bench seats. They have a wedge shape and take up the least trunk floor space. I removed my first aid kit and plastic holder to allow better sound travel into the passenger compartment.
If you are thinking about using the first aid kit opening to mount a subwoofer you would need what' s called a free air subwoofer. In essence your closed trunk compartment becomes the speaker box. Free air subs are designed to perform in this environment not in sealed or ported boxes with specific volumes. Again I just tinker with this stuff. I've found the Crutchfield and Rockford Fosgate websites to be good sources of information as well as various car audio discussion groups. If you're planning on getting a sub you'll need to wire a seperate amp to power it . Oh yeah, exit 102.

I think I will go for a subwoofer setup, and I think I'll go for a
free air in the med-box space. I will probably first finish of the fronts with those polk 4's. Then I have to check the head unit, it's a Blua that the previous owner installed, definately solid, but I don't know the limit of its potential in regards to RCA out puts and type till I pull it. If I remember right, pioneer makes a pretty good free-air sub. I'm guessing my size limit is maybe one 10"?? I have most of the wiring from back in the day systems, like nice 4-gauge ground and power wires and some musica RCA's all from crutchfield. And then maybe a nice capacitor, 1/2 farad and a USA acoustics amp. My order of events though is the front speakers, then Euro headlights (gotta do it), then I'll probably do a little suspension work, and then its on with the low frequency's. How does yours sound, inside, and while your outside? -Adam PS-That Belmar?? |

mb quartz speakers
i have had MB Quartz speakers in Quattro. installed with nakamichi deck and nakamichi amp (4x20w i think). was disappointed and wallet quite thin. friend recommended MORE power. i installed a 4x50 watt amp and the difference was amazzing. have used Kappas and they also sounded much better with high powered amps. be sure when you install you match speakers to amp requirements. some salesman will tell you anything, even at high end shops. crutchfield salesperson helped me greatly.
