Yes, I too am interested in the "word" on the rainbows. Just cause they are oem replacement doesn't necessarily mean they produce quality sound. I would like to hear if anyone has installed them as replacements of the stock cheezy dash speakers running of the factory power. i have a '95 e320 and I think there is an amp that runs everything (~20 watts to the fronts if I remember correctly). Scott, those speakers are supposed to fit in the dash of a 124 as a straight swap? They look to big to fit in the tight dash location of my car. you've installed these before? What is your impression after the swap?

T%her a re a few people on this forum that have done it and # 1 they do sound excellent ( I know it is hard to belive the person selling them) so I am going to find a post where there is a second opinion on them. They fit all 124 dashes with no more effort than replacing the factory speakers with factory speakers. They snap in and have the factory speaker connectors already installed on them. It couldn't be any easier.

door speakers?

Scott,

You seem to recommend the rainbows for the front and rear speakers, what about an upgrade for the door speakers? Is there anything that compares to factory in terms of installation ease, but sounds better??

Thanks,
Matt

I don't have much in the way of a free 6" subwoofer. There is a not much improvement that can be expected from the door location. It is a bad position for subs. I would't spend a lot of money on the doors instead I would suggest the rear deck as being a lot better location for a subwoofer.

Hi all,

I´ve just installed a new pair of rainbow dash speakers.
They are very good. The sound stage improved very much and also the sound quality. Incredible, I also got more bass coming from the dash!. Go ahead.
By the way my head unit is a Becker 1431.

Best Regards,

Alexei

for the door subs the single best thing you can do is make them into midranges.

Add a subwoofer if you want bass, but take those door subs, rewire them to be a midrange, and enjoy better sound.

I took out the sub caps off those speakers, resealed the boxes they were in, wired up some cross overs and they sound much better. and All the voice is no longer coming from behind me only.

Rainbows in 1994 w124's

I have the radio with the weather band +tape and 6 CD changer in my w124 1994 E500 and I was wondering if anyone did the Rainbow swap with the factory speakers in any 1994 or 1995 W124's with this same radio?

Was imaging ,dynamics, micro dynamics and detail- improved? How was the timbre affected?

BTW what is the power handling for these Rainbows? I have a MC4000M McIntosh 6 channel 1000 watt (4 x 100 + 2 X 300)amp that I would like to use and wonder if they can handle it.

Very excited to see speakers that are from a good manufacturer that can go in factory locations.

BTW who made the original factoryspeakers (the OEM?)

Scott, do you have any measurements of the Rainbow speakers mounted in factory dash spots, of a CE if possible, with a measuring microphone where it's usually placed for RTA measurements at car-fi competitions? I'd be overjoyed if you had reliable measurements that were either unsmoothed or 1/12 octave smoothed, but 1/3-octave (as one would get from a typical car-stereo-shop RTA such as the AudioControl SA-3055) would work, too. I just want to get an indication of how these things work.

I know 2nd, 3rd, and 5th-order distortion measurements at 90dB would be too much to ask for...

Otherwise, any advice for how to trim the composite baskets on some 5.25" DEI neo coaxes I have lying about? I was planning on taking my Dremel to them (after testing it out on the breakaway rim they provided!), but if you know of a cleaner way...

Peace,

Jay
