Hi
I have a 87 300E and installed a kicker sub box; however, when I played the bass even a little too loud, the trunk rattle is noticible. You can also hear it on the outside of the car, not to mention feel the thump. What can I do to eliminate this noise? Thanks!

There is nothing that I know of that will stop this annoying rattle synonamous with MB trunks. I have asked a couple people that have Dynamated their trunk, both of them saying that it did help very little, probably not worth the expense. This weekend probably I am going to attempt to use a combination of four products: expanding foam, aerosol Dynamat or Roadkill, rubberiezed undercoating and Dynamat sheets. I will put the expanding foam between the two layers of sheet metal that the trunk is made of, then spray probably two coats of the aerosol, cover that with rubberized undercoating b/c the spray Dynamat/ Roadkill is water soluble, then put a layer of sheets. Hopefully, this will eliminate most if not all of the annoying rattle. You may also want to take out the entire trunk linig and check for loose objects (screws, nuts, etc.) anything that may have fallen in there from your install; I found a couple screws anyway.

Easy...

I bet its the oddment bin screw.... what I mean by this, is.... when you remove the circular bin from th middle of the spare wheel, check out the plastoc bit that it screws onto...this has a habit of rattling big time.

If its not this, then I'd bet its the lisence plate. Use some insulation foam behind the plate to stop it buzzing.

On my trunk, I removed the cardboard panes and wedged foam in there, but careful you dont cover up the vent behind the left panel.

If he's having the same p[roblem I have, it's not any of those. However, when starting to Dynamat, I found the problem! There are vents on each side of the trunk; the rubber flaps in them vibrate VERY loud. I just took them out and *presto*

Boy, thank goodness I dodged this bullet! Even at ridiculous volumes, the only thing that seems to rattle in my 500E is my trunklid star. I plan to remove it and perhaps apply a very thin coat of silicone to the back of it. You might want to check this item.

Is it a bad idea to fill up the hollow spaces between the taillights with the foam spray? I dont want to cover anything I may need later.

ss109,
hi. i installed my sub and amplifier today and it kicks pretty hard...only complaint is that there is loud ratlling from the trunk, and like you, it is probably from those rubber flaps in the trunk vent...how did you remove the flaps? i think that will be the solution, since its the only thing i can tell is rattling...also, is it better to face the sub upward toward the ported holes where the old speakers used to be, uprught and toward the interior of the cabin (toward the gas tank), or have the sub facing the outside of the trunk, with the back of the box flush against the gas tank area? thanks...

My box is sealed and the 2 12" woofers are insalled in a "V" firing upward into where the med kit used to be. Sounds very nice. You might want to consider removing your med kit and just covering the opening with some sort of screen.

That's exactly what I did. I removed the two compartments in the rear deck and covered the openings with grill material matching the interior. You can also build grills that stick up half an inch or so for a more professional look. As for the rattling, a little dynamat took car of it for me. Turn the subs on and try to locate the areas that rattle. Apply some dynamat, listen again, etc...until you've eliminated all the rattling. One good place to start is the backside of the license plate. I realize Dynamat is expensive, but there are alternatives. B-Quiet is a very similar product that is very affordable. Something else you can try is tightning the trunk latch.
