Dynaudio, Focal, Audax, VIFA tweeters, scan-speak, KEF, Jordan SPS... Personally, I'd rather like a pair of custom made AVI 4". Anyway, theres stuff ranging from $80 per pair, to $5000.

Be a bit more specific bud... what music do you listen to? What other equipment are you running? Whats your budget?

So...

Are you looking at mids, upper mids, midbass, fullrange? What? What other kit you running? I'd recommend the Jordan drivers, but if you've already got tweeters then theres no point. Give me something to go on here bud, for all I know the $3G you have invested is all on the amp or something.

Adam,

Love to help you, but you really need to be more specific...perhaps detail what equipment you've got installed already (types of speakers & where, types of amps) and how it's set up (how much power, any processors, crossover points, etc.). Then us folks can help.

AND PLEASE STOP SHOUTING! Ahem.

I figured his system was so loud he had to shout.... ;-)

Seriously Adam, without any more info its kind of like me saying:

'I've got $500 to spend on my car, what shall I get'

What car? What do you want? Performance? Looks? Eh?

Unless you can get some serious sound up front, i.e. more than the 4in.... say a 65 component set, theres little point in being so extravagent in the rest of the system, as it wont sound right.

2 x 12" Cerwins??? Hmmm, your 4in front drivers wont keep up. All you're going to get is boom. You need to think about something more radical if you want decent music sound. If you're just after boom, then dont bother with high quality 4in drivers.

Also, no amount of EQ will sort out the sound if theres HUGE holes in the sound...i.e. theres not really going to be anything between 100hz, and 500hz, which is where drums, bass guitars etc live.

Brian:

I am getting ready to do the Stereo in my 300E. I have removed all the speakers and the Beker, and have decided on a Nakamichi c45z head unit, driving 4" Boston Acoustic CX41 speakers up front (They sounded better to me on my classical and jazz CDs than the RX41s). I plan to use the rear speaker holes as ports and put a NHT sub in the trunk as you described to Michael for his 500E. I will use the rear speaker wires as speaker level inputs for the NHT amplifier. I have modified the center counsel fader switch, converting it to an aux input for MP3 files. My questions are:

1) what would you recommend for an amp that has speaker level inputs, and won't overpower the 4" BA speakers in the dash, which will only be powered by the head unit?

2) What is the best way to get a (4 guage? 8 guage?) power wire from the battery through the firewall, down the center counsel, under the rear carpet, and into the trunk. I think you once indicated you knew of an easy way to get through the firewall.

Thanks for any help.

You'll be ok, dont panic. I must get some sleep, but will do amore detailed reply in about 8hrs.

For the cable thru the fire wall, remove the glove box inner shroud (6 clips and the latch 'hook') Theres a gromet behind there that 4 or 8 ga should go through fine. You should be ok with 8gauge in all honesty, but if you can run 4.

The NHT and 4in should be ok, as the NHT sounds good all the way up to 250hz so you;ll only have a 1/3 octave or so dip.

Why use the rear speaker wires to drive the amp? Doenst the Nak 45 have RCA outs?? Id do that if you can... much better.

As far as which amp, thats up to you, but as Michael can attest, if you stick more power on the NHT it just keeps sounding better. I've got 1.2 KW on mine, and after having 200W on it, I wouldnt go back. So much sweeter sounding, and it grabs hold of complex basslines. For instance, Pink Floyds 'Money' is breathtaking.

You'll never overpower the fronts if the gain on the sub amp is set right.

Hope this helps.
