Question which way do i face the subs?

im not a firm believer in the idea that that it does not matter which way your subs are facing. some say that since the frequencies are so low as to supposedly radiate everywhere. if this were true then there wouldnt be the gas tank problem.

im debating cutting holes in the rear deck - will probably just overcome with sheer wattage.

so which way do i point my subs? face upwards or rearwards-away from the evil sound absorbing black hole of a gas tank?

if anyone has pictures of their subwoofer installation please post em.

Best advice anyone can give you is to try em every which way before permanently installing them. For some, facing rear and against the seat back works, for others it's the other way around. There are installs where the subs are on the rearmost part of the trunk, facing the seatback. Lots of variables. The best way to find out is to test it.

Cheers!

Well here's the thing.

im not sure if its going into a 124 230CE or a 123 230E.

either way im going to have problems. what makes it worse is i think neither car has any stock rear speaker placements.

ill let y'all know how it goes.

Here's a pic of mine. They're facing towards the license plate as you can see. I think they sound great this way. I have the bass turned all the way down on my head unit and they're still loud as hell and they aren't even very good subs so i'd say that it's a good set up. Also if I wouldn't worry about making port holes for the bass. If you get any halfway decent subs you should be able to here them no problem.

My single 10 is in a ported sealed enclosure.

I ported it straight into the cabin, and the sound is excellent.

My suggestion is to play with it in different directions, because one of them will definately sound better.

The trunk in a benz is very well insulated for sound levels, and it has thick sheet metal in the rear deck. this makes it hard to get the full effect of a subwoofer if you ask me.

Porting may cut the car and interior a bit, but the sound will definately be better.

I am not one who would normally cut up a car unless needed, but in my case, it was needed.

I can't wait until I do my finaly upgrade. hopefully I'll do a new amp, speakers and head unit to compliment my sub. should end up with it sounding very nice.

My factory speakers still sound great though...

I found this out too. I've got a pair of decent 12's pumping in the trunk.... the sound inside the car is great but from the outside you just hear a muffled rattle. It's like the trunk is practically soundproof except for the seat back area which allows sound to get into the car.

Ashman - How did you port your subs into the car? I have seen the difference also, as I had a single 10" bumping inside of my single cab truck that I used to drive... this thing was loud and crazy because you're getting the direct waves, my 2 12"s from the trunk hit hard but they just don't sound as good. I'd like to port my subs into the car as well, but I wasn't sure how to approach it. If you could give me some pointers/tips/pics or whatever I'd appreciate it.

I'll snap pics and then you can see.

My box is a sealed box with a port for the sound. the entire box is sealed and the only area for sound out is the port. so I essentially cut a hole and extended my port into the cabin of the car. Its plenty loud for me.
