??'s for SCLJA

Hi Scott,

I have a 1997 C280 and removed the radio yesterday. The Model # is CM 2396 and the S/No is AL 2396.

Does this mean it's an Alpine head unit? Everything is fine with the unit (knock on wood) but the LCD has some missing lines to it. The FM and CD are broken up (not visible).

Is this an easy fix to replace the LCD portion?

Also, what makes the Bose system unique? Upgraded speakers or just the amp in the truck?

Thanks so much!

Rich

CM-2396 Question

Hi Rich,
I'm Cleeve and I work with Scott and to answer your question about your radio, yes, it is an Alpine unit. The problem with the display is a common one. Unfortunatly Alpine seems satisfied not to sell any OEM parts to anyone. I have been arguing with them for years. As a Service Manager this is veery frustrating for not only us but to our customers. I do have exchange units for most of the Mercedes/Alpine units. If you would like me to help you SEE what you are listening to again let me know. You can contact me through my Web site: www.lajollaaudiorepair.com

As for the Bose systems, They are very good sounding systems designed for the picky audiophile. They do have some issues that if addressed properly will help them last for years to come. We get more compliments on our Rebuilt Bose Amplifiers. We cut no corners and use high-grade parts to replace the lesser quality ones. With that people sware the sound is much sharper than ever. With the thousands of amps repaired we must be doing it right. If you have any more questions feel free to ask.

Cleve or Scott,

What are the issues with the Bose systems that I should be aware about?

So, with the Alpine unit, I'm stuck with the display problem or exchange the head unit?

Thanks so much!

Rich,
The display is a non replaceable individual part which means factory repair/exchange only. So, if it isn't bothing you too much then wait till it gets worse or contact me direct and we will send an exchange unit to you at a discount. Let me know what you want to do. www.lajollaaudiorepair.com

Issue with Bose Amps

Rich,
As to the Bose amp issues, Common problems are that the speakers either produce a popping sound that can vary in intensity or a hissing or high pitch buzz that also varies in intensity. These sounds may come and go from time to time so don't think it fixed itself like alot of people tell me. Electronics doesn't just fix itself. It gives you warnings sometimes that a complete failure may be soon. These noises are your warnings. This is generic information about the Bose systems no matter what car they are in such as Mercedes,Nissan,Honda,Cadillac,Etc...

What's the procedure for the amp? Is it an exchange or repair on it? What's the cost associated with it?

I know you mentioned that you have had great success with the Bose repairs. What are the components the go bad, etc?

Thanks so much!

Rich
