I was told by Mercedes that a CHM-S601 is not compatable with my 98 C230 and would need to purchase theirs. Is this true? After all I can do when I plug it in is insert & eject cds. But my stereo which is a factory original made by Alpine doesn't even know it's there.

With the proper adapter it should work, I use a peripheral MBZIL for 96>98 and it always works for me.

CD Changer Adaptor
Hello,
I know a little birdy that designed the product you need and LaJolla recommended. I have a 1996 C280 and a clone Alpine changer. Anyway, the reason your stock deck doesn't see the changer is because it is made not to see it. Mercedes makes more money that way! There is voltage sent from the after market changer that the deck recognizes as the aftermarket version trying to connect. The adapter simply breaks the path on a specific wire and viola you got music. It's a simple fix on the W202, other manufactures such as GM, etc actually send data bits down the communication bus every so often to check that the changer is valid... those adapters are much more complex... they mimic the stock changer so the head unit stays open on the CD input.... The newest Mercedes radios commincate on the Bus and I don't believe there is an adaptor for those, nor will there be. This is because Mercedes has gone to fiber optic communications with the changer. The new E class is the first to have it and all 2004 models will be this way.... So you will be buying the stock changer or putting in a whole new system. Just a little background on the whole thing... buying the adapter gets you the connectors that match properly... |

Adaptor Website
http://www.peripheralelectronics.com
This is the manufacture, they distribute to mostly everyone that installs car stereos... probably Best Buy, Circuit City and your local car audio shop. You might find it for a better price on the net as these types of components are usually marked way up by shops as a needed add on. (No offence audio shop owners, everyone has to make a living! we understand) |

Do I hear that there is infact a adapter for the fiber optic version if the OEM CD ?
I have a the fiber optic cables pigtails hanging in my trunk. I called peripherala nd they said they don't ahve a adapter for fibre optic yet. I see that some folks here are using Becker CD CHanger but that one seems like is not gonna let me use MP# CD music. I want my MP3 cds to work!
any ideas?

Can you still buy Alpine CD changers (601 etc) that work with the 1998 MB factory radios (with adapter of course...)?

Cd changer
As an aside the radio in the '94-'95 C280 is an Alpine and PIE makes a pigtail for $29 or so That plugs right into the radio and the rear cable plugs right into an Alpine CHM-S630 6 disc changer available for $189 at www.sbh.com. Call SBH and they can give you the PIE part #, I don't have it anymore. The setup worked thru the stock radio buttons and boy does it sound goood!
