replacing parcel shelf on W126

I have a 84SD which has 4X6 speakers in the parcel shelf. Is looks like later 126's have 6" or 6.5" speakers in the shelf. Will a shelf from a late 126 fit in an 84? Also what year did the shelf change to the bigger speakers? Looking for a little more mid-range and this might do it.

thanks

Bob H.

hey,

I am doing the same thing you are thinking of. I have a rear deck from a 91' 560. I am going to try to mount 6.5" speakers into this deck. I have an 82' 300SD with little 4x6s. I am told that the newer rear deck will fit.

Thumbs up

Late 1986, early 1987 it changed I guess. There's a car in a bone yard here that's an '86 420SEL with the 4x6s still in the rear fill and my '87 SDL has the 6.5s in the back.

The midbass is far better in the '87 over the '85s factory stereo.

If you're wondering how a custom deck looks:

http://benzbeat.blogspot.com/2011/02/w126-300sd-custom-6x9-speaker-and-back.html

I originally was going to do the updated deck replacement and realized it was just easier (and more fun as DIYer) to make my own. Came out really well, and sounds fantastic.
