this is sicker LOL
Remove the med kit or what ever it is called get a Digital Designs 9510 dual 2 ohm voice coils power it with a MMATS d200hc 1 ohm stable amp and do this get a 10" MDF sub mounting ring for your sub and raise it about 2/3" from the rear deck panel using small blocks of MDF to keep the woofer basket from slamming into the rear deck then fiberglass the sub mounting ring to the rear deck or have it done by a pro so that it looks nice. Install the sub wire up the amp and use the trunk as a huge sealed enclosure.
What do you think? HogLeg ![]() Me I opted to buy a JL Audio 8.2 micro sub enclosure and am putting in two Resonant Engineering RE 8’s in the enclosure (it’s a small ported enclosure) install via the metal hanger onto the rear shelf point the sub @ my head won’t be quite as loud as my previous system in a VW GTI 3 JL Audio 10W6’s wired in parallel powered by a DEI 1100d in a semi individual chambered dual ported box, but this will get me by until I get another hatch back and can use my Digital Designs 9515e to it’s fullest potential. Good luck. HogLeg Bam7390@bellsouth.net ![]() |

I'm not thinking that big. I'm just thinking of using a pair of free air 8" subs, and either putting them under the medical kit lid (ideal since it will hide the subs, however I wonder about the lid rattling), or I was thinking of trying to mount them directly under the rear headrests, as flush as possible. The rear headrests will still go down and rest on top of the sub's grills, and somewhat hide them, and then for max bass just raise the headrests. I wonder how thick the material is that the rear deck is made from (not the metal underneith). If it's 1/4 inch, the install might be fairly flush.... But right now I'd rather put them side by side under the first aid lid (they'll fit, I checked)
I don't need really loud bass, just good bass. Check these out: Crutchfield 8" free airs Kickers So with them side by side, do I wire them both mono, or stereo?

sick install...
Howdy again,
The Kickers you are thinking about to be honest I have never heard them powered up. To me they would make nice subs mounted infinite baffled in the front doors this would put more bass in your front stage. Check out the Kicker L7 10" or the 8” square sub you should be able to remove the med kid and it should fit but don't hold me to that I have never measured the space just make sure that you have an air tight seal between the sub and the mounting location...you can get them in dual 2 ohm(you could run it @ 1 or 4 ohms depending on how the sub is wired) voice coils or dual 4ohm (you could run it @ 2 ohms or 8 ohms) voice coil depending on your amp or amps load stability I run dedicated amps 1 class d mono amp to the subs and a multi channel to my components you could also build a small enclosure to mount directly under the sub that you mounted in the med kit area and make sure that this area is sealed directly under the sub and there you have your sub box. What amp or amps are you working? If you have a 4 channel amp for the front stage you could run your components and & the 8’s off each channel. The Kicker square could be run off dedicated amp for the rear? This is how my system will be in my W123 once all the components get here and are installed Head unit Alpine CDA 9815 (don’t have yet) , Diamond Audio Hex 5.25’s (got them) and a pair of Digital Designs 6.5’s mids (got them) but are really bass speakers in the front powered by an A/D/S P840.2 8 (got it) channel amp all 8 channels of the amp will be used on the front stage, the rear subs are Resonant Engineering RE 8’s (will be here this week) they are single 2 ohm 8" subs they will be wired to a 4 ohm load powered by an XTANT 2200ix(got it) bridged to 1 channel for a 4ohm single channel putting out about 400 watts the amp has been bench tested to put out between 500/600 watts depending on voltage and even though it might be a little over kill cause it’s not a power house system maybe a Stinger1 farad capacitor. *Suggestion it’s definitely worth paying to have a system professionally installed rather than taking the chance of burning up the components that cost us so much of our hard earned money… Just my 2©ents HogLeg Bam7390@bellsouth.net ![]() |

Uh, why not get the Jehenert setup that puts two 6.5's in each front door, which is equivalent to one 8 per door? And it looks factory, too, not Rube Goldberg...

Hogleg.
The kicker solobaric L series are not for infinite baffle mounting, only sealed or vented. They have to be in an enclosure. I know you are going to say that the trunk is an enclosure but it is to large in volume and you will blow the subs if you mount them that way. The 8" and 10" need less than 1 qubic foot ot airspace thus the enclosure can be kept small. Louis. |

"Uh, why not get the Jehenert setup that puts two 6.5's in each front door, which is equivalent to one 8 per door? And it looks factory, too, not Rube Goldberg"... which are around $650.00 to $850.00 Euro's pretty reasonable? www.jehnert.de If I was going to go that route I would just have custom door panels built! And like you should have been told when you were a child growing up if you can't say something nice don't say a damn thing & if you weren't then I'll just correct you now! I do not appreciate the Rube Goldberg remark one bit! ![]() mb123mercedes I think that it's possible that you miss understood my post building an enclosure that is either sealed or ported under the rear parcel shelf that's air tight and having the sub mounted on top of the rear parcel shelf so that it is air tight or sealed off this would be just like a sealed or ported enclosure without having to cut the rear parcel shelf out. Sorry, but anything attached to the headrest area, or attempting to get 8's into the doors, has a decent probability of not looking really good. Just my opinion, not trying to insult anyone.
You can get the door panels from Jehnert with no speakers for $400 USD, and then buy whatever drivers you want. Their price including four Quart midbasses is still decent though. It gets more expensive if you want the full kit with the dash adapter, mid, tweeter, and 3-way custom crossover assembly (that's $900 USD shipped). It will be nearly impossible to put anything up front without massive work and/or custom fabrication, and at that point, you have to consider what your time is worth. Putting a sub or two in the rear deck is MUCH more feasible, and can be made to look stock without too much trouble or cost. I've seen some decent free-air installs in a 124. They won't pound that hard but they can look great and give a nice bottom end. For maximum / ultimate bass you need a bandpass box in the trunk, that vents into the passenger compartment... and lots of power! ![]()

Maybe, but infinite baffle means without a baffle
or free air, thus no box. Louis. |

Well yes. You need to decide where and how you want to install your subs, and then purchase a sub with the proper Theile-Small parameters to fit your intended design. Don't buy a sub first and then make it work for your car, that's backwards.

I think most of us know better than to drill into the fuel tank. What you've seen (I hope) is people cutting a piece of wood using the carpet between the trunk and tank as a template, and bolting that to the trunk floor and underside of the package shelf.

Sub options
Having done two different sub options in the W124, I feel like a bit of an expert.
First, the space in the seatbacks really isn't large enough to get a good box for the subs to work from. Getting all the pieces and parts stuffed in there, AND making it look good, would be extremely difficult I think. As has been documented here time and again, the challenge with trunk mounted subs is that the gas tank is in the way, AND the trunk is very well sound insulated. In a 300E, I had two 8" free air subs installed underneath the headrests. 6X9 grills were installed where the headrests had been, and a fairly large board was installed under the package shelf to mount the subs and amps to. The headrests themselves had to be removed completely. In my current 400E, I have built a sub box with 2 X 10" subs ported through the First Aid Kit shelf. Each sub works off about 1 cubic foot in volume. I had about the same power in both applications - a "300 watt" amp, which is probably generously rated 75 watts per channel in stereo. The free air sub worked better overall. It hit really hard with all kinds of music, and deep bass was much better. I would give it a an "A-"The fact that the drivers were working directly on the air in the cabin I think was the biggest difference. My current set up with the box ported is quite good. I have left the 400E's existing door mounted subs as is, and they do a good job with mid bass, while the sub box does a pretty good job with deep bass. I would give it a "B". The free air subs required quite a bit of work under the rear deck, and major cutting of the space behind the head rests, which were then useless. My 400E has two 3.5" holes for the ports under the First Aid Kit you can't even see. You do lose some trunk space with the box, whereas the rear deck mounted subs left almost all trunk space available. There are a couple of other good options on this site you should research, including the one from "Italianbenz". Good luck! Mike
