SCLJA, ever install nav in a W140 cell phone cubby?
Scott,
I was wondering if a GPS unit like the Garmin GPS V can be squeezed into the dash cell phone cubby of a W140. It's a wedge approx. 5.0"W x 2.3"H x 1.6"D (12.7 x 5.9 x 4.1 cm) according to garmin.com. Anyone have ideas on getting a turn-by-turn GPS system into a W140 for less than $1000 and without having something that sits atop the dash? Is there a GPS device with video output compatible with the in-dash screens commonly available in car stereo shops? Thanks, Sixto 95 S420 91 300SE 87 300SDL 83 300SD |

Interesting . . .
you started me thinking about replacing my Alpine GPS someday! The display is no longer made (TME-M006A), so if it dies, then a new GPS is needed.
I looked at the cubby in my C140: have apx 6.5" x 3.5" x 2.5" (LWH) after moving the cell phone over. So a Street Pilot III (I like the color display) would fit nicely. I guess the only (VERY) bad part is that you have to look away from the road to see the screen. But would sure be a great place to mount it! |

My wife has a Street Pilot III which seems physically too big plus the cubby opening (at least in a sedan) seems like it will restrict any view of the screen. But maybe it'll work. Time to yank that phone! The nice thing about the SP III is voice prompts so you don't have to keep one eye on the display all the time.

Sixto, if you do this, please be sure to post results (maybe with a pix?) Have wondered about a good use for this space as well...

Are you saying . . .
that the SP III is bigger than the GPS V model?
The total space in my cubby is 7.25" x 3.5" x 3.0". Some time ago, I moved the phone over to the edge to free up more room. |

From garmin.com,
GPS V = 5.0"W x 2.3"H x 1.6"D (12.7 x 5.9 x 4.1 cm) SP III = 3.2"H x 6.8"W x 2.6"D (8.0 x 17.3 x 6.5 cm) SP III gives you a color screen, verbal alerts (not just beeps) and a more comprehensive list of dstinations (food, lodging, attractions, stores, etc.) Maybe it's possible to have a 7" display pop out of the cubby like the nav display in a RR or Bentley.
