Why would only 4 out of 10 cds load? PROBLEM SOLVED
Hi,
On a 92 300E with a becker silverstone, does anyone know why it only loads 4 out of 10 cds? It's strange cause it loads and plays #2, 3, 9, and 10. Pushing any other button shows "no disc or empty, -- --" and doesn't load. Too bad I had not found this thread earlier, I recently got a new original cd magazine as I just bought the car in July and it was missing (I would have looked for a sony magazine instead. Any help with this problem would be a big help. Thanks in advance, Acky Last edited by Uncle Acky; 08-15-2004 at 10:16 AM. Reason: Problem now solved |

hi there...
I am sure its a black Sverstone BE 980 you have. I used to have the same problem. Is your thing mounted vertically? If so, try mounting it horizontal. This may ease the pain for the rubber roller to slide the disc it. All-in-all, your rubber roller inside the stacker is weared. This thing is now stopped production and can be serviced by BECKER. However a better solution is properly buying a new Alpine which is CDR and MP3 capable. All you need is some wires and a special interface converter from MB which can be purchased in the states. Do you have the model number of your Becker radio?? If so I can tell you what you can buy to fix it all. cheers |

Hi and Yes it's mounted virticaly.
I still don't understand why it loads 2, 3, 9, and 10 but not the rest. Are there different rollers for all 10 cd's? Will I have to remove the changer so see the model # or can I use a mirror to see it? Is there a repair manual available? Thanks for your help |

to be very honest, I would't spent time in reparing the thing. The reason being these things stopped production around 93, I think, and parts for them are not available except for serviced parts. This is why MB sale a interface thing so that we as customers can buy later models stacker to replace it.
To answer your question: 1) No its the same roller, 2 rollers in fact, that will slide the disc our of the case on to the turn table. 2) If you put the thing on horizontally, other disc may work because gravity down force on the disc will help the rubber on the rollers to slide the disc out. Other slot not working maybe caused by slight mis-alignment when the rollers move up/down to extract disc. 3) There is 2 slots on the slides which adjust the stacker for vertical or horizontal placement. Make sure that us set properly. Ont slot on each side of the stacker. 4) Mirror??? I am quite sure your stacker is BE980 if you can confirm it says Siverstone and 10 Disc and its Black with Sony type cartiage. As for your system, I don't know how you can tell the model except for reading it off the tape slot cover which should say Mexico 2000 or something similar. Alternatively, your CODE card will definitely say the becker model number there. If its a BE1432, I can tell you what cables, Interface and stacker to buy which will plug-n-play into your current setup. This solution will leave the entire setup original with the exception of a new alpine stacker. |

Thank you very much for the detailed help.
I noticed that when I shuffled the cd's around in the magazine, a very strange thing happened. The cd in #1 slot did not play before and showed -- -- on the display but when I put the cd from # 2 into #1 slot, now #1 plays. This makes me think it's the cd itself and not the changer. The strange thing is that another cd that didnot play in #8 does play in #10 possition which was OK before and one that did play in #9 now also plays in #6 which previously showed -- -- (emply) before although a cd was installed. I don't expect you to understand why this is happening but it does not make sense and there may be a solution out there. I don't want to replace the unit because the cassette tape player is broken and It's my wifes car, she isn't fussy about listening to music although I would like to get it to work if reasonably possible for when I/we use the car. If this fails and later becomes an issue I will replace the radio head unit with her choice and keep the original to go with the car when we sell it. Thanks again for your good advice, Acky |

i have the same problem...
it just seems to be that certain cds can't be read from the changer. mine will load them all, but then 6 outta 10 won't play...the changer gets frozen...and i have to completely power down a couple times to get it to work. also, some cds will all of a sudden start sounding like crap...like and amp problem. think i'm going to install and new changer and the old mtx amp outta my other car.

Problem solved
Well it seems that some CDs are larger in diameter than others!
I noticed that some CDs slid in and out of the magazine while others were tight, I actualy sanded the outer edge of the CDs untill they went in and out of the magazine freely. It works perfectly now, and I still can't believe how simple the repair was. Thanks Acky |

Glad to hear that your problem was solved. My Silvertone player finally quit after 13 yrs, sent it off to becker of NA in Jersey, good turn around time, well done repairs. Sent my 240d radio/cassette player in for cleaning and fixing the cassette player and was very pleased with the service.
