WTB stock radio for 90 300SEL

I have a 1990 300SEL with all the speakers and amps, etc, but no radio.Does anyone still have their stock radio out of a 89, 90, or 91 126? My hearing is not that great so I'm not looking to spend a lot of money on a superb sound system I can't hear. Stock works for me.

Thanks,
Peter

I have mine. It worked alright- one of the lights was out and the tape player didnt work all that great. It needed to be redone by becker ($$) so I just replaced it.

You can have it for $10.00 plus shipping.

How badly does the tape player not work? I play more tapes than listen to the radio.

Inter-changeibility? Took a perfectly working Becker out of my 86SDL just to move to CD's. Just setting on a shelf -I believe the code out (- - - - -) when disconnected.

TX,
I have access to codes, but I will have to check part #s, because the 86 may not have speakers in the doors and booster amps behind the rear seat like later models. I also wish there were someplace to buy replacement face plates for radios like Alpine, because I have several radios with no face plates.

Faceplates? Check EBay. Last time I looked, there were dozens of them. Also, there's always an old Becker or two on there too.

Also, there's always an old Becker or two on there too.

Autozen

I'm thinking that only '88- '91 radios would hook.

The tape playe worked alright when I pulled it out...was a while ago so I can't really give a good description.

I changed my mind about price- you can have it free if you pay shipping. Mercedesshop.com only deal

Donbryce,

Thanks loads for the tip. I bought an 89 190E 2.6 for my 81 year old mother, and she loves the car. With the decreased strength and flexability that comes with her age, she really likes all the power seats and locks, etc. The car came with no faceplate. I bought a 1990 300SEL to recondition for my daughter, and it also came sans the face plate. I pulled the unit and it is an Alpine CDE-7820. I just bid on a faceplate for $9.99. I'm willing to go higher if someone else starts bidding. Thanks again for the great tip.

Mike,

If you want to email me privately, I'll send a check to where ever for what ever you consider right. I could afford to send it in for reworking.

Thanks,
Peter

Peter,

This might not matter anymore but I'm pretty sure the plug-n-play solution for you is a head unit from an 88-90 126. Such a unit runs with amps and has a built-in tuner. The 91 126 and (some?) 91-on 124s use the Becker 1432 that has provisions for a CD changer and the tuner innards are in a separate box in the trunk.

If the car came with an Alpine unit, the wiring might bypass the console fader and antenna switch in which case an original Becker won't be so plug-n-play this time around.

Sixto,

I yhink you are pretty much on track, but I think I can dig all the wires out of the console to take advantage of the door speakers and the amps behind the seat. I have the Electrical Troubleshooting Manual with one line function diaghrams to help me. It is sad that MB put crappy Becker radois in the last of the 126s and put nice Japanese radios in the 124. The radio says Mercedes on it, but says made in Japan on the case. MB didn't put some of the neat 124 upgrades in the last of the 126s. They just let the line run out.

I won the bid on the faceplate on Ebay. I sat there for over 2 days with the only bid at $9.99, and 10 minutes to end some clown came from nowhere with a $23.00 bid. I had to bid $24.00, but I'm happy, because I can just shove the unit back into the dash without going through changes. I also actually bought a whole other Alpine for $58.00. The guy lives close, and I'm going to meet him and save shipping.

Thanks again guys,
Peter

That's called 'sniping' on EBay. The idea is to bid at the latest possible moment to prevent the other guy from having a chance to outbid you. Glad you won it. The price from the dealer would probably be several times what you paid, even at $24.00.
