Question W124 what size speakers??? & W124 systems pics?

door = 6"
dash = 4"
rear = 6.5"

That is what I picked up reading the archives, but not sure if those are stock sizes, sizes after cutting, or what???

I am not rigging anything, want speakers to fit behind stock grills. Are those sizes correct? Is there "minor" cutting involved to fit what??

Any links to any pics of systems in w124's?

Didn't find much going on in the archives

thanks

The 124 is tough. You have the '95 model I see (classy move by the way, amazing car to drive) , so you could be in better shape than those from '93 and before.
I know that in the '93 the rear deck speakers were 5 1/8 in.
You're going to have to do some cutting in order to switch these, as it's pretty difficult to get your hands on 5 1/8" these days.

If you are going to put a trunk located subwoofer enclosure, you will probably also need to do some cutting.
The sound sucking black hole of a gastank is located between the rear seats and the trunk of a 124, so unless you have a pretty serious system in the trunk, you wont get much base unless you remove rear speakers or cut the rear deck where the first aid kit is.

In my '93, I replaced the deck (stock one broke, wish it didn't. ) wiht an alpine deck, left all speakers stock, and put a 12" Boston Acoustic Rally Series powered by about a 1500x1 watt kenwood amp.
Without any cutting or removing speakers, this setup suonds incredible. But my other set up (2 10" Boston Rally's and a 300x2 kenwood) sucked.

It's touchy, as some boxes to the trick and some don't but the right set up will sound good.

Hope this helps, don't hesitate to e-mail or private message with questions.

Best of Luck

Thanks for the info. I am going to go next week to a couple audio shops and see what they say, and what they would put in, and go from there.

Red face ohhhh

I had seen that a while back and forgot about the article thanks.

I have to reread the responses, but don't remember reading what size speakers "normally" go in, being such an odd size. I might have to visit a stereo shop or two and see what they say.

Wonder, with these not being the newest cars if the installers might have a problem with the install. I do not know if I am up to doing an install anymore, I used to, but gotten lazy .....

You'll see the biggest difference by replacing the stock dashboard speakers with Rainbows. Scott from La Jolla Audio sells them - they are a drop-in fit (direct replacement, no cutting necessary).

If I do remove factory radio, I will be keeping it most likely. I will post should I decide to sell.

I might as well do some cutting and fit some "normal size" speakers vs just fitting in stock location that way I can expand my selection brands to choose from.

I might look in cardomain and see if there are any pics in there.

thanks

When you remove the front speaker grilles, you'll see what I mean. It's near impossible to fit anything bigger than a 4" speaker in the hole. Someone managed to fit 5.25" speakers in there but that involved removing the dashboard and mounting the speakers from the bottom.

If you do end up using a 4" speaker, you'll want to make a mounting plate to fill up the space between the speaker and dash otherwise bass response will be very poor.

thanks

Went to Sound Advice (local stereo chain in FL) today and the installer said:
door = 5 1/2"
dash = 4"
rear = 5 1/2"

Oh well not quite a match to what I read ...

More specifically, the OEM speakers are an odd metric size, that's why it's hard to find direct drop in replacements. 120mm in front, 130mm rear.

That's why the odd size issue then, metric.. argg.... Ok....

I went window shopping yesterday for the stereo, and man you can get a lot of radio for $300-$400! Forget the Becker Mercedes units! I will live with not having a mercedes "authentic" head unit. LOL

in my 300ce, I did the following and it sounds very nice.

Dash - mounted tweeters from seperate component system.

Doors - These fit a 6.5" speaker in the factory door speaker casings. I removed the internal crossover/capacitors so the speakers would put out a full range of sound and not just bass.

Rear deck. You can fit a 5.25" in there, with a little creative dremeling of the speaker pods sot he new speaker baskets will drop in.

Rewire all the speakers bypassing the fader switch.

Run the wires down either the left or right side ofthe car, or down the center whichever is easiest for you to do.

I used the following speakers and the sound is good, but I also added subwoofers and amplifiers to the system.

Infinity reference series components
6.5" component speakers
5.25" component speakers.

Using the right setup can give good sound. choice of speakers ios up to you.

i installed 5.25s in both the front and the rear. both needed work to be finessed into place.

the fronts needed the dash to be cut just a little bit, and the speaker surrounds too. then with a little jiggling the positioning worked.

the rears appeared to be easier. turns out they werent. the hatshelf is made of a high strength steel. you can cut it, but i only had a dremel and didnt have the power or cutting bits necessary. i tried to buy some spacers but all the shops i went to had 6 inch spacers only. so i used the plastic speaker surrounds as a psuedo spacer and used window insulation from home depot to seal. it worked but i blew the speakers somehow, i think the amp still powering the rear speakers through that fader might be the culprit.

door speakers were the easiest in retrospect. pull door panels. remove speaker enclosures, remove speakers, install 6 inch subs from a component set, replace everything back.

am trying to do the same thing...but could you please explain the "plastic speaker surrounds" - what are these and where did you get them???

the window insulation from HD - are you talking about the weather stripping (comes in a roll)?

thanks...
