Black Box in Trunk - '95 E320
I found the wiring in the trunk (on the right side) to support the CD changer. Then, to my surprise, I found a black box in about the same position on the LEFT side of the trunk, with wires running to it. Can anybody tell me what this is?
Oh - the car's a '95 E320 Special Edition 4-door sedan. I just got it recently from a family member. Thanks! |

In my 1995 E420
It's the electronics for the built-in phone. Check inside the armrest to see if you have the remnants of the Mercedes phone. It's pretty much unusable today - an analog phone that few wireless carriers support anymore.

Not only do I have the "remnants", I have the entire phone, never used, in mint condition.
Yes, it is pretty tacky by today's standards, but since it's an original part of the car, I've kept it in. Now I know what the box is for - thanks! |

...and it was.
It has the phone, and has the hands-free option. Both of these are probably only useful if I sell the car to someone who intends to have it in "museum" condition, though. And while I do have it for sale, I don't see any museums beating down my door. Thanks for the info. |
