I don't know how they do it, but a detailer I use has been able to get the carpets spectacularly clean every spring. I have switched to some slightly larger winter mats to keep as much salt out as possible. Its a pain isn't it, very ugly and it has to do some damage. Try a steam cleaner, like one of those portable bissetts or something.

I've never tried it, but according to all my chemistry classes, seems to me a steam cleaner should work. Sodium Chloride should react with the water, become liquified, and then sucked up with the vacuum cycle.

I do not know about chemistry, but a steam cleaner will work out well.
If you take out the carpet, clean them with a steam cleaner, suck up most of the water with a vacuum cleaner and hang the carpets somewhere warm to dry entirely, the effect should be stunning (it works perfectly with the Dutch salt).

I just throw them into the washing machine. Air dry outside and they will come out good as new!

Floor carpeting (with foam backing) is just scrubbed with a bristle brush and laundry soap, then air dried.

Here is a trick from a detailer...me!!

Take about 1/4 cup of ivory liwuid soap and fill your bath tubup with warm water. Place the mat in the water and then scrub it with a bruch, while keeping the matt fully submerged. All the dirt and nastyness will rise up to the top of the water. Pull the matt out, drain the water, then rinse and scrub the matt in warm water only. After wards, let the matt completely drip dy. I think you will be quite happy with the results and also how inexpensive this method is.
Good luck and let us know how it turns out.

An easier and faster solution.

Go to a high pressure car wash, they have those hanging mat clips, hang them, soak them with carpet cleaner, and then wash them with the pressure washer, DO NOT GET TOO CLOSE WITH THE PRESSURE WASHER, if you do, you will damage the mat, it will push it together and spread it, hard to describe. but anyway, when you wash it like that, it will all rinse off.

Then air dry them, and then take a home vacumm cleaner with the rotating bristles and vaccum them to bring them back to life. I do this all the time and they look new.
