Sagging headliner?
I bought this 1980 240D for a parts car recently, but it really is in decent shap, so I've been driving it around a bit testing it out. The interior is in very good condition, headliner is excellant, except it is sagging a bit in the middle. Is there a fix for this? I dont know how these are attached, Im guessing that the bows that are going across probably need replaced, is that how the headliner keeps in the up position?
thanks, Jim

Did you do a search? I'm sure there are some threads about this on this section. There is an adhesive 3M makes for this purpose, but when I tried it a couple of years ago, I discovered the substrate to which the fabric was attached had deteriorated to the point that I had to replace the whole kit and kaboodle.
Good luck with yours.

I had mine done in medium gray faux suede. Looked AWESOME and does not have the foam backing that falls apart, so it will last as long as the 3M glue (FOREVER)

Yeah, that foam backing was the weak link in mine. The fabric was okay, but the foam backing had disintegrated.

I had done a search in the past, and remember somebody referring to the 3m glue. But, I did not find the answer to my question, exactly, anyway. So, maybe you can answer? Are the bows what keep the headliner in the up posisiton OR are is the fabric initially glued to the underside of the rooftop, and that is what has come loose?

Alas, the headliner I replaced was in my Lincoln. I'm not sure how yours in held in.

headliner bows
I'm interested in this also. It's obvious to me that the bow just forward of the rear window is no longer attached to the roof of the car. Has anyone done a R&R for these? What is holding the bow to the roof and how are they replaced?

I have the same problem (sagging headliner) on W123 300d. I remember I used 3m on my old toyota many years ago but it didnt work well. Maybe I'm more experienced now. I'll try it again.

I've taken a couple apart in junkyards to get a closer look. I don't believe the headliner is attached to the rear portion of the roof using glue.
It appears that the bow is inserted into a pocket sewn along the width of the headliner. The ends of the bow fit into rubber grommets near the top of the C pillar. The grommets deteriorate and allow the end of the bow to slip into the C pillar area allowing the bow to straighten out and sag. Normally the bow is held in tension by the grommets up against the top of the roofline.
