If you live in a sunny climate and have smoke silver paint you know what 8,10,12.... years of sun can do to it's appearance. Faced with a $3000+ paint job, I was desperate enough to try a crazy sounding idea posted by Michael; he said his brother wiped his car with an Armor All like protectant and the car looked 1000% better. Last week I used Lexol vinyl on a 2 inch square,no negative side effects so far, so today I did the whole car...WOW It's amazing!

I don't know the long term effects of doing this but right now it looks great. Can anyone enlighten me about the possible drawbacks of doing this

Don't know of any ill effects, other than it's durability and the need for re-application. I've got a smoke '87 190E 2.3-16 that I'm considering doing the same to. Previously I had a silver '80 Volvo 242GT that the paint had dried up so badly on, I resorted to doing the entire car with an armor all rag. WHAT a difference. Fills in all the spider swirls. Enjoy!

Very interesting...

.. I too have a smoke silver '91 300E and the paint finish just aint what it used to be. Living in South Texas has taken its toll on the finish. I've tried super abrasive rubbing compound, followed by a light oxidation/swirl mark remover, then a coat of wax and only have found minimal improvement.

Time to break out the Armor All. Nothing to lose really I suppose.

BTW, why is this color called "smoke silver" ?
