But you have actually done this, Douglas? I was afraid the synthetic nature of vinyl would not allow the dye to penetrate and attach itself permanently to the material.

I will E Mail them. You are right. They're pretty good about answering E Mails.

I have never personally dyed vinyl, but I've seen it done to a friend's BMW and it was flawless. Just knowing the product though is enough for me to say with confidence that it does work on vinyl. It's all in the prep work to make sure it's able to adhere to a clean, textured surface. Fortunately, MB Tex already has a slight texture to it.

The water-based dyes (and not just Leatherique's) are amazing today. I'm about to re-dye my W123 dashboard, in fact. I just have to fill some cracks first.

I have their crack filler, too. I was looking at it and at the cracks in my dashboard, wondering if it would work on that. I might just try it. If I do, I'll post the results here, too.

I spoke to the people at Leatherique today, and they said you can use their dye on vinyl. You have to first clean and prep the vinyl with their prepping agent and 400 grit sand paper. Then the dye will bond to the vinyl.

I'll post some before and after photos of it when I do mine.

I'll wait to see your pics Dee8go. I'd really like to get rid of the pinkamino look in my wagon, but I'd hate for it to rub off on my clothes.

So far, so good. I can't say enough good about this Leatherique stuff. The people at the company are nice, too.

Now that I have it running again I'll be able to finish this project as soon as I have a few hours to work on it. I'll post the pictures.

The dye isn't the issue

I have 100% confidence in the dye. It's more like paint than shoe polish, so you shouldn't have any concern about it getting on your clothes after sitting on the seats. It dries hard as a rock.

My experience with the crack filler wasn't as good, but you're asking a tremendous amount of anything to flex and not crack. I tried it on some leather seats in a sedan and it didn't hold up over time. The cracks eventually re-cracked. It may be better suited for a dashboard since people aren't constantly sitting on it!

The seats look good, except they do not exactly match the original color. Now, it's bothering me and I am going to call Leatherique to see if I can return the dye and have it custom mixed for the extra money. If it is, I'll redye everything again AND do the dashboard. The stock color they sent me looked like a match at first, but turned out to be too gray.

Unfortunitly it probably does match, except that all the other areas have gone through 20+ years of sun and cleaning solutions. I thought you were going to do the door panels, pillars and visors also. Might want to check your local auto motive paint store and see if they do custom blends. Dupont makes interior leather/vinyl "dye" and a good place will have a gun that takes a "picture" of the color your trying match (faded gray) and turns it into a formula to blend. A good paint tech will tweek it futher by eye if needed. My local guy get's $30.00/pint and wants a sample (like the arm rest) that can be left to get the match exact.

Well, I called Leatherique and left them a message. I didn't get a custom mixed dye, just their stock color. It has too much gray in it, though. If they'll let me return what I have with a sample and the extra $30.00 for a custom mix, I'm going to do that.

I'd like to do the dash, too, but only if I can get an exact match.

Uh Oh ... there's only 9 days left for you to finish this before the GTG. Will that be possible? Custom blends, shipping times, application and drying times ... I hope I get to see it finished on the 27th.

All the leather is done, but it doesn't really match the vinyl parts or the cloth. I'm not changing anything right now, but would like to redo it and get it done correctly.

I need to do some mechanical work on it this weekend, so I'll put the interior back together for the time being.
