Currently detailing an Astral Silver 190E - looking for pics of clean silver Mercs for inspiration etc.

How hard and thick is the paint on a 1990 190E?

Mine's Smoke Silver and the paint isn't perfect, but it's clean.

The original finish was clear-coated. If there's no clear coat then it's a repaint and you should figure the paint to be soft.

A metallic silver car has to have clearcoat.

Looks great - younger than it is. Would be pleased with this finish.
W126 aint bad too

It's clear coat yes but I could still strike through that with a rotary buffer (which I'm using) so wanted to know if I need to be careful of that?

This is the car I refer to:

I lurk on the Meguiar's forums a lot, and just about any Mercedes paint is regarded as being hard as can be. In fact, a common sentiment is that a DA polisher is almost useless on factory Mercedes paint, and that rotary is the way to go. Of course, with any rotary, you probably want to have a paint depth gauge as well.

To be honest, I don't own a depth gauge, but do occasionally fire up my rotary on older paint, even clearcoat finishes. Just don't start out too aggressive, and be careful on the crowns no matter what pad and compound you use.

Edit: For the record, I'm not a professional detailer. I just like clean cars, and have accumulated equipment and practise over the years.

Hmmmm, Chad300tdt's car is the same color as well blended JB-Weld. Coincidence or convenience?

For those of you guys who haven't followed his excellent rust repair postings, Chad is a big believer in the use of JB-weld for rust repair.

The CD is rust free except for a small spot on the driver side corner of the valance. No need for any epoxy on Gladys.

Chad owns a lot of stock in the JB Weld company. He's just looking out for his own interests . . . . That's funny. A JB Weld-colored car. I once had a car that was "Bondo"

Mine used to be all "Rust Oxide" when I lived in Indiana. Now, they're all "Sun-fried Oxidised".

The Defiant... The day I drove her out of the junk yard. I still can't believe someone gave up on this car. Near perfect paint, perfect window seals, great looking window chrome... I'm picking new seats for it this weekend, then it will look amazing.

That's a good vehicle. I do hate those twin round lights they gave the W123 for the US market though
