Info on changing seat cushion and adding some padding on 300SD
Hi,
I had a broken spring on the front driver seat (1985 300SD), found a seat at the junk yard and decided to change the box spring as well as adding some much needed padding... Following the info I found from other members I used a 1/2 inch rubber mat and also added some "pool noodle" to the new setting. Took me about 5hrs to complete the task, I have absolutely zero experience as a mechanic and I am confident that it can be done in much less time.... The result is spectacular, the seat now feels very firm, much more like current model vehicle. When I was at it I took some pictures, for two reasons. First I wanted to document the removal which really help me for the re-install. Second I thought that it might be of interest to other member of this very useful forum. So here is my modest contribution: http://gallery.me.com/flangenard#100535 Problem I encountered: 1)- I had hard time removing the center screw of the railing, I kept the seat connected to the electrical plugs in order to move the seat and align the center screw with the hole in the frame. 2)- Hard time re-installing the seat in the slider by myself but if you can find someone to help it should be an easy task. Suggestions: 1)- Remove the back seat (more space to maneuver) 2)- Once removed, place a pad or blanket under the seat while working on it. It will prevent scratches. 3)-Take lots of pictures during the tear down, very useful during the installation. 4)- Label the connectors and wires under the seat, they all look alike, making sure they are reinstalled in the right place. 5)- I used 4 inch "pool noodle", easy to install and it give plenty of extra firmness. 6)- I used some rubber garage floor pads to place under the cushion, inexpensive. All in all, it was a great day, no bolts or screws left over after completion and the electric seat still works... Hope this help and if I can do it, then anyone can do it, believe me.... |
