W123 Ashtray & Lighter
I've noticed that the underside of the ashtray/cigarette lighter unit has what appears to be a socket. Looking at where this socket would line up in the receptacle, I'd expect to find pins or leads that make contact when the ashtray is in position, providing 12V power to the cigarette lighter. But the ashtray receptacle doesn't have anything here except a smooth metal bracket. Does anyone know how the ashtray was originally wired, and what that socket is for? Right now my lighter socket gets no power at all.
I've attached photos of the tray and receptacle, with red highlights around the contact points I've described. Thanks, -Greg |

As you face the ash tray there are 2 connectors in the mounting frame that power is applied thru. Ground comes thru the frame and a wire ground is NOT needed.
