Recovering Rear Window Deck

The deck under the rear window in my 80 300SD (which spent most of its formative years baking in the hot TX sun... ) is rotten. The fabric crumbles when you touch it and I have looked everywhere for a replacement fabric, but no luck. I am about to pull the seats out for the Leatherique treatment and this would be a perfect time to take care of this. Funny, the leather right in front of the deck is perfect...a bit dry, but not split/cracked. Any suggestions on how to get the panel out and what to recover with?

Thanks for the tip.....I've got a sample on the way from those guys now. Where did you get your manual? I'm pretty sure a Haynes is not going to be the best bet. I've seen a couple of ads, but not sure who is the best. I'd like one for my 450, too.

Thanks!

hi i just recently recovered the hatrack on my 1980 300sd.the condition was similar to what you described sun bleached and crumbly.i was able to find an exact match for the material at a local fabric outlet(interior colour "tobacco")you probably have one of these shops in your town but the location will only be known certain members of the opposite sex(grandma, mom in law ect.)i found the masonite support to be water damaged so i used the old one for a template.the 1/8"masonite was available at home depot.you will also need a can of spray adhesive.the only tricky part was the medicine kit.try to save the decorative edge around it on the original.youcan cut this off with a sharp utility knife and reglue with white glue.the handle for the medicine kit should be saved from the original.when you remove the original hatrack you will find some of the material folded under it.this piece can be used for a color match. good luck

I'm looking to replace this material in my SEC. I didn't hear anyone say how this is fastened down or how you go about removing it to recover it.

On another note, do you have to remove your seats from the car to do the Leatherique treatment, or can you do it in place?
