Painting Chrome? (AMG style)
I've done a few searches and couldn't seem to find anything on this one so I appologize if its been covered... I have a 1983 126 coupe and am considering doing the old-style AMG look and painting everything black. (The car is already 040 black.) Whats the best way to paint over the chrome, aluminum strips and grill? Is it done in flat black or 040 glossy black? I've got a lot of mods on this car that I won't be able to get back on a sale and its the first car I've bought with my own money so I have no plans of selling anytime soon. I'm not a huge chrome fan. I like the non-flashy, "this car means business look." Any help would be appreciated.

If the grille can withstand temps of 400 degrees think about powder coating. If its plastic it'll have to be painted but I'd recommend having it dechromed first. Otherwise the paint will chip off and you'll have chrome peeking out from under the black paint.
Another option is some guys are using black vinyl decal material thats cut to size and has adhesive backing. Has a glossy finish and looks like paint. Can be tricky stuff to work with though.

I have painted all the chrome on my E420 with no problems so far.A good etch primer then base/clear coat worked great. Picture attached I hope.
