removing finish from stock wheels

Ive got a 1984 190e with teh stock wheels on it. The finish on them is showing its age and looks pretty sad. I was able to remove the finish from 1 wheel by hand using only steel wool and water but it took me about 6 hours and left me with bleeding fingertips. If anyone has suggestions on how to remove the finish without harming the metal beneath Id be greatly appreciative. once the original finish is off I plan to use testors black gloss enamel around the outer edge of the wheel and finish it all off with a coat of clearcoat tro protect the metal and paint.

thanks for the advice
