rust spots
hello
my question is on my 87 420 with a gold/champagne. it has quarter size rust spots at the edge of the sun roof 4 of them. the po used touch up and did a very poor job. i would like to cover them up properly. i have purchased the factory touch up paint. now i'm wondering if i could use the langka system. these are not little chips. i will need to get the rust out which may make the spots bigger than they are now. so the first part of the question is would langka work on spots as big as a quarter? i'll have to pull the seal out to get the entire spot. or what about cleaning the spot then sanding out and spraying the spot then rub it out to match then do a clear coat and then rubbing that out to match. i know the color may be somewhat off but it would be more acceptable than the rust. Note: i found a guy in wisconsin that will mix up factory paint in a spray can. this is a daily driver so i'm not really interested in laying out major dollars just to make it acceptable to the eye. i appreciate any advice you guys can give me. tks craig

I'm not sure the best way to handle your rust problem but I wanted to comment that if you're referring to Tower Paint, their spray paint products are outstanding.
They match factory paint perfectly, so you won't be disappointed. Good Luck

stonechip rust spots
I found 11 of these on the roof of my Euro C180 1994 and what is called filiform corrosion which is veins spreading out under the paint coat from the rust centre. I have dug right down to bare metal and removed anything which looked like rust. Then treated with 2 types of rust killers/busters, dried the patches and used thick car paint of the same colour to fill up the surface dents. I overfilled the dents to ensure a good seal. When dried after a few days, I sanded down to the surface level and sealed with wax, polish etc. Unfortunately, the sanding down with 1000 grade left the paint shade different from the original if seen from different angles. Looked better if it wasn't sanded down. Think this will last me a few years before I manage to do a full respray provided I still have the car.

Have you tried to get an estimate from an MB approved body shop? I had some work done on my last car, sounds like the same amount of rust but in four different places. They got rid of the rust plus painted with paint from the factory for a little under $200. Not only could you not tell there had been rust there, but you couldn't even tell where they has repainted, it all looked seemless.
