Wheel well wondering
Hi all,
Just bought a 1993 SL500 a week back, and as usual I'm bringing it up to cosmetic perfection like all my other cars. This SL - unlike my other MB's - has very nice wheel wells. I don't normally get excited over something like this, but these interiors are very well finished, and don't have that thick tar undercoat that every other car seems to have. How can I clean them? They seem to be painted, a bit like the bodywork, but putting a shine in there would look a bit over the top. So what can I use to get a nice black matt finish? Your help please! Ken Silver -------------- 1993 SL500, glistening black/grey on black leather, soon to be best in country! 1991 Daimler, shiny grey on grey leather, best in country! 1991 Miata MX5, sparkling BRG on tan leather, wife's (but my polishing) 1992 Honda US s/wagon, black/grey ex 350SL, 230E, 280E (and a lot of other makes not as nice) |

Hi Ken,
After you've thoroughly cleaned the wheel well use some Griots Undercarriage Spray. The spray will go on like a heavy oil but will dry to a hard satin finish. It also helps keep your wells clean and makes maintenance a breeze. Here's a picture of one of my wheel wells after some heavy cleaning and Griots Undercarriage spray.

Thanks Afshin,
I actually saw your earlier posts and photos on your wells in my search, but we're unable to get the Griots products here. It looks ideal though - maybe it is worthwhile buying it from the States. Do you know of any similar product? I believe Griots can ship internationally, definitely worth checking. Buy a gallon and their spray bottle, it goes quick! 20 ounces will cover the wheel wells and leave enough for future touch up unless you drive the car in rain regularly. 1 Gallon should last a 1.5 years if the car is a weekend toy only.
![]() There's nothing quite like the Griots Undercarriage Spray however there are a few products that provide similar finishes. I would check with your local motorcycle shop for products such as Pigspit, S100 and other all purpose sprays which can be used on most surfaces. These sprays are usually aerosol and are designed to improve the appearance and protect most plastic, metal and rubber surfaces. I use Pigspit in my engine bay on painted, metal and smooth plastic surfaces. I also used it in the wheel wells on rubber surfaces. I wish I could help you further but I'm not as familiar with products available overseas.

No doubt this stuff will stain a driveway.........
Mark,
I took every precaution to prevent overspray onto the concrete but as you can see from the picture I managed to screw it up. Needless to say parts of my driveway still bead water (12 weeks now) and stays dry whenever it rains. ![]() ![]()
