It's a sig, I didn't post it there, it goes on every post, but I will remove it if it upsets you. Not here to start fights, just talk diesels.

Thanks Sam.

I had thought about something similar, but not about politic's. Decided it would be better for someone who does not drink, smoke, or chase wild women to post a signature such as mine. But there was a time many years ago that my life style was much like that. I think most can see the humor in it, and it's not politicial, pro or anti religious and doesn't make fun of someone's race or color.

Hang in there young man, sounds like you have a pretty good head on your shoulders.

Hahaha. Thank you. And I'm sure you could still chase the ladies if you wanted to .

Also - If you're ever looking for someone to take that 240D off your hands, don't hesitate to PM me! I have been wanting one of those forever, that is the Diesel to end all Diesels. I almost bought one a few weeks ago, but it turned out to be a junker.

Sam if this 240D is like every "project or quriky" car I've ever owned then you might be hearing from me within about 2 years.

I've averaged $100 a month for about 6 months in fixing minor problems. Like today I ordered new trunk lock and fuel door lock and dashpot (vacuum check valve), total with shipping about $65, last week it was a new mast for the power antenna.

The leaking steering box has just about stopped leaking after adding some power steering stop leak stuff. The engine compartment on this car is almost showroom clean, no oil leaks from engine anywhere.

Jeepers Navy, those sound like sucker items to me..... Just how important is the power antenna vs. radio shack $7 antenna. And disconnecting the entire vacuum lock mechanism should be S.O.P. for everybody except those who constantly run errands and travel with family of 5 who all jump into the car at once, locking and unlocking the doors at every stop.

C'mon guys, cant you keep it on topic or take it to PM's?

One thing I'm wondering about MB dealerships is whether or not they provide loaner demo cars........ Hell yes, I'd like to drive a Maybach sedan for the afternoon while my rusty '79 240D is in the shop!!

Seriously, does anybody know if MB dealerships provide loaner cars for repair customers??

Well I guess I could drive around in a clunker which nothig work's, have 2 or 3 junk car's in the yard, etc. But that's not me, I bought the car with the idea bringing everything up to mechanical standard then maybe do a new paint job and other dress up stuff.

I now return control back to you sir, sorry if we upset you with our sidetracked BS'ing.

Never been in a MB dealership, so I've never had a bad vib.

It seems like if you don't fix every little problem they all pile up and take away from the joy of driving such a nice car. I think it is still on topic as buying parts is the reason we go to dealerships.

I guess my goal is about the same as Old Navy's....to bring it back up to as near original condition as possible.

I have tried to replace my antenna mast with no luck. The dealer sold me one with "teeth" on the nylon. I see on the internet that there is a "smooth" style and a "toothed" style. Dealer parts says they have only ever seen the toothed style...(is this still on topic?? I am talking about dealer experiences....)

I guess I better start another thread about our goals with our old MB's .

Nevermind!

Do you have any part of the mast left or can you do the up button to run up the nylon? To replace the mast takes about 3 minutes. Remove the locking nut at the top of the antenna base, and remove the old mast stud with any remaining nylon. This can be done my turning radio on or hitting the up button. Once this is done turn then just stick the new nylon back in (tooth type the teeth face toward the front of car) and turn radio on, it will self load and all that's left to do is reinstall the locking nut.

Yes it is one of the jobs easy enough that I undid it and redid it just to take pictures for my site.

Old Navy,

I will try it again tomorrow. I have a tad of nylon left on the old mast. It has no teeth on it. No nylon comes out of the fender when I turn the radio on or off. I can get it to pull about 3 inches of the new nylon down, but no more. It makes grindy noises when it starts down. I tried it several times, but I was working alone. Maybe I need a friend to turn the radio on/off, while I try to feed in the nylon.
Thanks for the tips.....
George

I've managed to do it myself a few times but have to lean it on the trunk or let it dangle for those first couple seconds it is realing in. It sounds like you either don't have the teeth facing inwards or down in there far enough.

Oh and now it is probably officially hijacked.

So back to the question, how comfortable do you feel at a mercedes dealership?

George if your old mast nylon was smooth then you need nylon with no teeth. If your dealership doesn't know the difference, look here at Fastlane, and you can get the correct parts + save bucks.

I find the dealership parts guys and the techs to be down to earth people who are very approachable and knowledgeable. Its the few incompetant service advisors who I hate dealing with because of lack of communication skills and knowledge who almost always screw up something. The worst part is going in to the dealerships service counter and trying to explain your cars problem to the gucci model sittng at the desk so she can tell you to wait at the coffee bar while she try's to find the service advisor. Although I do enjoy watching her strolling around the waiting area

Old Navy,

That's exactly what I thought. I even tried to return the toothed one to the dealer, and the parts guy told me that is all they ever had.

Maybe they will take it back after I walk in there with the correct one!

George
