Most of the time they are getting their clock cleaned from some politician, friend of the owner etc for being such flippant aholes. Remember Lilly Thomlin "we are the phone company - we care very powerful and can shut off your phone". Same thing over at parts.

I showed up in a Pat Metheny Tshirt one day and they promptly went into SH*^@ head mode from the appearance. Right up till he saw a "Dr. xxx" on my credit card, then it was "Oh! Dr. xxx can I get a cup of coffee for you" etc. I had Phil on the cell phone and told our parts friend that I just got the part 50% cheaper and he could stick it.

So don't let these morons bother you. Consider the source. It's rare when I really need them for parts, and if it's that critical I'll just go to another dealer.

As far as the other customers, I make it a point to sit right next to them (20 other open chairs there), and I pick my nose, fart and/or make annoying conversation about politicians or something. I asked a lawer one day if that was his 78 240D outside - [the car was trashed lol]. He promptly hurumped and blurted out real loud that HE owned a 2004 CLS55 or something like that. I asked him if that was one of those little Alabama cars with the little 4 cyl motor. He was furious, and stomped out. So I had my fun for the day. I tell you, these people can be entertaining...
Flick the chip off your shoulder and get on with life.

The dealer in Arlington Heights, IL is quite nice. Parts and service people are cool. Although they have one salesman that was not cool to me. He gave me the high pressure sale about some beat up 99' E300 and I told him to eat it. I told him to find me a different one and he never called back. I now drive my 99' in front of his office window to remind him that he didn't get my sale.

LOL, some of you guys are funny. I agree, get the chip off your shoulder. Stop projecting your own superior attitude onto the guy next to you just because you're jealous or trying to prove something. Many of those guys are @$$es, but many others aren't. Don't be an @$$ just because you expect him to be. If you do, the only thing you will prove is that YOU are an @$$ as well, and reinforce many peoples opinion that guys who work on their own cars are slobs/white trash/inferior/etc.

I also see alot of people talking about the "new pieces of crap" while alot of us here drive cars that are only 10-15 years old. So, when those cars were new, were they pieces of crap as well? I doubt the new cars are really that bad, except for the "fiddly bits" as someone else put it, and even the older diesels aren't that much better on that it seems.
I'll bet if a new Benz were driven and taken care of like we do ours, it will outlast our cars. I'll also bet that 99% of them will NOT be with their original owner, but the car will still be going strong.
With few exceptions, it is not really the initial quality of the car that determines how long it lasts, but the quality of care it recieves throughout its life (but a really good car does make it easier!)

I dunno...I do get a uncomfortable feeling for a second or two when walking into the 'ship what with all the high end people and machinery sitting around. We do live in a society where money determines status afterall, but my discomfort evaporates quickly once I remember that money does not a better person make. Many if not most "rich" people I've met are quite dysfunctional and are fueled by their need to acquire more and more and can never get enough to find more then temporary happiness...like constantly trying to fill a water bucket which has a big hole in the bottom. So I feel a little bit funky for a few seconds, get over it and once I get to the parts counter I'm like a kid in the candy store. My perfect day involves a warm evening, a pile of tools, a cold beer and a car to fix. Going to the dealership is only a lesson in human nature...and a pain in the wallet. I dunno...I grew up in a family that had pretty good money but my best time in life was when I was a broke cab driver...go figure. I guess the moral is that it's not so much what you have but rather how much you appreciate what you have. Just my .02 worth...

So true. The richest people I know drive old cars, wear basic clothes and no jewlery. At least I can blend in with them..

I perfer to have the paper on my vehicles. I hate making payments on anything... (including my house... which is the only thing the bank owns).

Talking Mercedes Dealer (North American)

I have a non-relationship with the local dealer.They are a BUICK,bmw,M.B.
multiple branded house.I am in Savannah,Ga.

I can drive to Jacksonville and buy parts ,have lunch , pay for the fuel to make the drive and buy the parts from Brumo's Mercedes and still end up getting M.B. O.E.M. parts for less than the local dealer will sell them to me for.
The local's (including the Franchisee)don't have a clue.

For a city of this size (less than 250,000)to have nine independant M.B.service operations [all doing well financially, thank you.]tells you volumes about the service at the local franchised dealer.

Modern Classic Motors on Hilton Head Island is also a multiple brand dealer(G.M./Mercedes)AND I have no problems when I visit them. The guys back in the shop are happy to discuss your problems with you.The people at the parts counter appreciate your purchasing anything from them no matter how small in cost.

In 1978, my thoughts were along the line of "Turbo Diesel? I want some of that!"
In 1987, more like "Aluminum head, I'm not so sure about that"
A few years later it began to move into "how's a guy supposed to fix that piece of crap?".

Now, I'm just glad that an IDI can be beefed up to run like a CDI w/o the computer, even if DI is still more fuel efficient. Some time next year, I intend to find out if a clutch from a 2.3-16v can handle a 300ft-lb OM602. (that being my estimate of the maximum torque a W201 with 2.65 final drive can transmit to the ground in 2nd gear)

MTU Power,

You're an idiot. I hope that you enjoy making a fool of yourself.

As far as being a "doctor", I'll just roll my eyes and laugh.

Nut.

With 19 posts, perhaps you do not know what a "Quote" box is, or I have offended you some other way that I and others do not know of.

Tony,

You are over the line - no reason to say things like that. You should apologize to MTU.

MTU was using a quote box from another post by buckwheat that itself had an embedded quote box.
