I was hoping to do this test by removing the cylinder. (All the threads I've read call this a 5-10 minute job.) Looking at pics of the back of the cylinder, it appears that the switch mechanism can be moved manually with the cylinder out. If it won't start with the key but starts with it removed, I have probably found the culprit. If it continues to not crank, I'll have to move further down the line, with your suggestion of jumping the contacts being next. If that starts, it would point to the steering lock starter switch. If that doesn't do it, then I may end up changing starters as leathermang fears.

What type of plug do you use for the oil line?

Anybody have a relevant wiring diagram that is emailable?
