Boostn,

I'm only a secondary stumble on this find. Damon, 1983 300TD, actually stumbled on this find and posted about it here last week ( a thread titled "1979 240D $100"). I wasted no time in contacting Damon and making plans to cruise up there, worked out great since I had nothing better to do that day except pull some Romex through a lath and plaster wall (which I did afterwork yesterday).

Mike:

I'm rethinking your attempt to swap starters and fuel issues up there (including tires).

Do you have access to a tow dolly? You can winch them up with a com-a-long and the stick allows for a 300 mile tow I'm thinking. Perhaps someone can confirm if pulling it in neutral is ok for that distance. I wouldn't with an automatic (had to drop the drive shaft last time I towed one). But a stick might work.

In either event, its a great find and should be a fun project.

And for $100? Too cool.

Don

The other alternative we looked at this afternoon (we as myself and one of the guys at the office) was the U-haul car hauler for $60/day. Would be a kinda fun adventure to fire it up in the field and baby it home though.

I agree about the adventure but I'm in the middle of a similar situation. A kid in our youth group got one delivered from her grandfather and dropped in my front yard. '75 240D. Looks great, etc but hasn't run for awhile.

I'm on my 3rd day on this thing with some kind of electrical issue that will only send power to certain components and not others.

A situation like that would mean multiple trips.

If however, the car ran upon shutdown, then I think your plan will work.

In any event you're welcome to borrow some mounted tires.

Well, according to the PO they had to pull start it (starter probs???) in order to drive it behind the barn, so it was running when parked. My guy at the office and I came up with the idea that I might just rent the hauler, we'll tow it up with his truck and hold it in reserve. If I can't get it running then we'll winch it up on the trailer (rather than a dolly in case the rear diff or halfshafts are bad). If I get it running I'll drive and we'll have the trailer available in case of any problems. Still get the adventure with a safety net. Then the only problem is getting that extra engine out of his truck...but I have an idea on that.

I like these com-a-longs (spelling?). I've used them to winch engines off the group from a tree branch etc.

Perhaps you can raise and lower the engine with one of them.

I like the safety net idea of having a car hauler.

When do you think the adventure begins?

Glad to hear you have a come-a-long at your house ...You'll play an unwitting roll, hehehe. I'll be back in Michigan on the 13th but don't know if I'll have the truck available. My sister will be coming to visit the following weekend, then I will be on the road [Long Beach Aug 26-30, Barrie (Ontario Canada) Sept 2-5, Jackson, Missisppi Sept 10-25]. Not much in the way of free time till then due to a grueling match schedule.

The trip to Barrie will be my first international competition.
