Aftermarket Common Rail Direct Injection - Available?
I know that this is probably an "out there" question, but has anyone ever seen or heard of an aftermarket CDI system?
I am curious if such a system could be cost effectively retrofitted to an older diesel or if the engine is purpose built around the CDI. I recently test drove the 2005 E320 CDI. All I have to say is "WOW". I believe that any oil burner enthusiast would be amazed and unbelieving of the power, speed (0-60 in 6.2 secs?) and quietness of this vehicle. I have to talk myself daily out of buying one! I can't wait until it is 20 years old so I can buy one on the cheap! So I wonder what CDI could do for a legacy engine, if it would even be possible.

By no means will I say it's "impossible" it is just a VERY $$$$ Idea.
I won't go into details on the differences (There are way too many) but I'll just say it's a nice dream, but I don't think there is much demand. Besides, in the end it would just be cheaper to put a CDI from a wrecked Dodge/Freightliner/MB Sprinter or E320CDI in place of the stock engine/tranny. |

I was interested in a CRDI system. I found this http://www.turbocompressori.net/common_rail.htm
Some interesting light reading on common rail systems. I have not yet been able to find anyone who has retro fitted. |
