True. 100 hp, 144 ft. lbs. at low rpm (no mpg figures). Rollout in spring '08 with 250 bikes. Gonna be *pricey.* Will pass on the cruiser. A sport tourer would be just the set-up.

Best conversion I've seen was built on shaft driven Moto Guzzi loop-frame. The original Guzzi V-twin engine was built with numerous auto parts anyhow, sharing starter motor, ignition points, generator and pistons with Fiats and Volkswagons.

http://www.dieselbike.net/motoguzzi.htm

Forced Induction, the guy ridin that trike probly needs flame retardant reflective suit to avoid gettin burnt to a crisp behind that engine. That was complaint even on the small Guzzi conversion, massive radiator air flow roasted the rider.

Too bad the 100mpg Hayes production diesel bike will NEVER be released to USA civilian market on account of "national security" forbidding fuel efficient vehicles on American roads.

That pic is my background

I have lusted after that particular bike for some time I believe that it is Dutch or German. I believe that the engine is a 3cyl Briggs Diahatsu turbodiesel. They also came in the diesel version of the Diahatsu Charade in europe & possibly elsewhere. The engine is used in some zero turn mowers and for repowers. It is available in 3 or more power levels from 28 to 42hp in the $4500 range new. The bellhousing adaptor from the engine to the trans looks like a section of a propane tank as other bmw diesel conversion owners have done have. That is the tidyiest looking conversion I have seen. Unfortunately the engine is designed to be run in the 3600 rpm range so top speed would be quite limited. I'm not sure if you could get the revs up much higher than that. The rear drive unit only comes in a couple of ratios 2.91 & 2.61 which is quite rare. Possibly the different wheel means they used a different make rear drive unit to get a better top end. I have toyed with the idea of converting one of the BMW twin cylinder engines I have kicking around to diesel. They have unbelievable bottom ends . I have messed around and gotten a 14-1 compression engine running on pump gas. It is not too much further to the lowest practical limit of 18-1 for a diesel. I would need a 2 cyl IP and a couple of injectors and glow plugs. I have been thinking about this for more than 20 yrs and have been into BMW twins for more than 30.

Hello everyone. I've got a 1981, BMW, with a John Deere tractor engine three cylinder yanmar. I have been watching the commercial development of diesel motorcycles for about five years now and I can tell you you are going to see them in the United States anytime soon. The best you can do is build your own. Mine gets a top speed of about 60 mph, but it gets a top mileage of 85 miles per gallon and runs great on biodiesel. attached is a picture of it. It was a lot of work, but I think well worth it. Plus when I go to bike week in Daytona. I sure get a lot of questions and a lot of audience attention. There is a lot of diesel motorcycles being built in Europe, mainly Germany and England but there seems to be a diesel phobia here in the United States.

I am a HS Auto instructor, and every year I go to the NC summer conference for automotive/trade and industry. A few years back an instructor from another county rode his class' project to show a biodiesel Harley Davidson. They built the bike from the ground up with all new parts, save for a barely used engine. The engine was a 3 cylinder Kubota from a welder they acquired. He boasted over 80 mpg's!
