[QUOTE=d.delano]I can call the roadside assistance # and still get help? Schweet.[/QUOTE They'll even bring you 5 gal. fuel if you run out on the road. I believe if you do a search here for "roadside assistance program" you'll find out the rest of the details.

Cheers,

Bill

If he is going from Georgia to Jersey he has to go through MD. You put just purchased on the car for a tag around here with that and you are getting busted for sure.

Using someone else's license plate may be the only way, but if he is stopped, he may be arrested and the car towed (though it's more likely he'll get ticketed and have the plates removed by the officer). If he hasn't been stopped in years and feels it's worth the risk - go for it. BUT, if there is a breakdown on the interstate and a trooper stops, he'll run the tag and - busted!

Make sure the spare is good (and that there is a jack). Buy oil. If you drive over 65, it will probably use some.

Bring a flashlight.

Cell phone and AAA card.

Couple gallons of water for drinking and in case of a radiator leak, it will get you to help.

Check tire pressure, fluid levels and have an adventure!

One more thing - ear plugs

Temp tag with bill of sale is best. second best vehicle plates with bill of sale,(have signed title with some proof of insurance).

Must be some hard a** cops back east.

I would never ticket a MBZ Diesel owner, might hold you up and ask questions about your car. As far as Iam concerned fourm members get a freebee in southern NM.

I wouldn't recommend starting fluid to any diesel newbie. I know there's plenty of controversy over how much damage starting fluid can do to our cars, but if it COULD hurt the engine, it's too great a risk. Gasser owners are used to spraying to their hearts' content... bad news for a diesel engine, by my estimation.

As for the issue of what to do about tags, there MUST be allowances in the laws of the states your friend will drive through for transporting a newly-acquired vehicle. For pete's sake, just call the state DMVs and ask! I have always just written "just purchased" on a sheet of paper and taped it to the back window, and never been pulled over. Your friend may have different luck in MD according to one post... so again, I'd check with the local DMVs.

Ugh....

Just tried calling the MD DMV to sort out how exactly they recommend transporting a newly-acquired vehicle through their state, and they are closed (as of 10 mins ago). Imagine that!

FWIW, their # is 800-248-4160.

MD. will for sure nail ya. We live right on the md. border in pa. and they will even pull a pa. car for an out of date inspection sticker even though md. has no yearly inspection.

Here in pa. I get the title first for the 'new one', then call the insurance, then over to penndot to get tags. Then I go to get the car.

Md. has 3 cops per driver so everyone is well covered.

cheers,

Bill

Wow... guess we have it good in IL! Who'd have thunk it with our Chicago political machine and the dopey unfunded mandates they so love to impose on us downstate folks. So to buy a car out-of-state, you either travel out to look, buy it, travel back with the title and get plates for it, then travel BACK to drive the car home legally, or buy it sight unseen, get the title in the mail, and then travel out to drive it home legally. What a pain! I feel for you!

I'm just waiting for the state boys to figure out how much $ they can make by requiring every county to test for emissions and/or safety. Right now, we have neither!

Chris

When I picked up my 409d in CA last year, got a temporary plate for $10. It was only supposed to be good for 'one trip' but I drove around CA for a few days before going home. Also got a temporary plate for the boat trailer for the Macregor which I just picked up in Portland OR and drove home ($25)

When I picked up my 307d just outside of London, I carried a complete set of tools with me on the plane. Put it in my luggage and it went thru X-ray. No one asked why I had all the tools. I keep a separate box of tools handy just for these kinds of adventures.

Chris, you don't know the half of it. In Pa. when you take your title to transfer ownership/get tags you must also have a "rub" of the vin #. They now accept digital pix but before the day of digital if you could not get a rub [in most cases you could not] you would have to take the car to an inspection station and get the mechanic to verify the vin. In some cases, the tag and title place can verify the vin. but it still costs ya--

If you are transferring a pa. title to a pa resident, both parties have to go together to get the paperwork done, where it is notorized and all fees, etc. collected.

If transferring a Pa. title to an out-of-state buyer, a notoary MUST be present when the current owner signs it over to the new owner.

We do have emissions, but not for diesel.

Cheers,

Bill

I would never drive a car without the proper plate in CT if you get pulled over you will be in trouble. Get a temp plate, or your better off driving with no plates, with the wrong plate they will be thinking stolen. Maybe even a drug runner depending on the route you take, be nice to the friendly dogie Not to mention if he gets into an accident his insurance might not cover anything.

So old Charro if you ever see a Blue SDL doing about 120 you won't pull me over right? Where are you New Mexico?

I drove mine home from Maryland to Georgia with no tag and got pulled over twice. Once in Virginia and once in NC. Once they saw the papers (and called them in for the NC one), I was good to go with a "drive safely". It's a good idea to get the seller to check if the Georgia DMV will give a temp tag, but with it being friday and him picking it up tomorrow, chances are that's not an option. Just make sure he has insurance on it with some proof (either a card or have the policy faxed to you) and the papers and he should be alright.

I must have got very lucky then. I picked up the car in Laurel, MD. Drove to DC and went site seeing and then headed home down I-95.
