Red face "Quick, Simple" oil thread

I'm going to switch over to synthetic oil for the fleet. They've all been running on Chevron Delo 400. Since my 87 300D is making some lifter noises, i'm planning to do the switch for that car first.

Is there any "precautions/preparations" before the switch? Or is it just a straight drain the old and in with the new?

Thanks.

Alright folks let's all just try our best and make this a truly, "quick, simple" oil thread. No long discussions/arguments on anything oil related. Chances are, it would already have been done before (do a search).

I'll take Whunter's word for it. Bought 3 - 5 qt jugs and 1 - 1 quart bottle of Mobil 1 15w-50, good for 2 oil changes for... $69.97

Whats the oil change interval with synthetic? MB's maintenance manual says 5,000 miles, i read from somewhere on this forum that says 20,000 to 25,000!?

Just fill with the new oil. I suggest changing the filter each oil change, cheaper than a new engine.

You will want to change the filter an extra time at about 1000 miles after switching, as the synthetic will strip all the "varnish" and any associated grit off the insides of the engine within the first few hundred miles, and any crud will end up in the filter.

This may or may not cure the lifters -- I have one or two tapping away after Mobil 1 and new filter shaft o-rings, so have to consider replacement. Whoda thought you might need new lifters after only 206,000 miles?

Thanks PSfred, I will make sure to change the filter too.

I'm guessing that after 1k with the synthetic, replace the filter again. But what is the oil change interval? I'm pretty sure its not every 3k like normal oil (unless you believe those jiffy-lube commercials ).

I do 6000 mile changes, without oil testing. If you do oil testing, you can probably run until you get too much soot, on recent engines this will be 10,000 miles or more.

On 615/616/617 engines, I suspect 4-6 thou is more like it, they collect soot much worse.

Thanks again, and to Whunter also... who happened to have posted as I was typing up my message. I guess this is it for this topic.

See old navy, there is such thing as a "Quick and Simple" oil thread.

:
Should use the Mobil Truck and Suv oil... 5w-40 and is good for diesel, found at Walmart for the same $$. It is the same as Delvac1 which may be difficult to find.
This oil will handle the soot alot better.

Where do you get 15W-50 in jugs? I've only seen quarts and only at Autozone. That's about $4 per quart before sales tax. It's $4.75 per quart at Autozone.

The good Dr. Booth says it can take several thousand miles for Mobil 1 to quiet lifters. Don't be discouraged if you don't get results after the first fill.
