Question shade tree mechanic

I have two questions about my 1982 240D. First, where is the auxiliary fan temp. switch located? #2, there is a coax cable connected to 12 volts with a small coil connected mounted on bracket over damper with timing marks. Bracket is connected to front of engine with about a one inch plug. Is this coil a sensor or what? It is damaged, but car runs fine without it. Is it important that I replace it?

Will appreciate any help with this..Thanks
