I have two questions about my 1982 240D. First, where is the auxiliary fan temp. switch located? #2, there is a coax cable connected to 12 volts with a small coil connected mounted on bracket over damper with timing marks. Bracket is connected to front of engine with about a one inch plug. Is this coil a sensor or what? It is damaged, but car runs fine without it. Is it important that I replace it?
Will appreciate any help with this..Thanks Oldcarpappy |

1.the auxillary fan switch is just a sensor on the a/c dryer set up. unless its been modified the fan only goes on when the a/c gets hot.
2. i think you are talking about the diagnostic/tachometer sensor sitting above the crank. not a problem if broken. don |

2) That is the sensor for the EGR computer (!)- which resides in the passenger footwell. The EGR computer takes in temperature and rpms and then decides how much egr to dial in (via a vacuum actuator on the intake manifold)
I have yet to figure out how that EGR rpm sensor can be hooked up to a tachometer..but give me a boring afternoon and a the goodies from a 300D and I just might do it (the connector on the 240D's are coax, the connector for the rpm sensor on a 300D/300SD have 3 wires...) -John
