wow!!! that's alot of smoke coming out of the exhaust pipe.

i've only seen trucks and busses smoke that much....it did seem pretty damn quick too. my 240D would definitely not be able to keep up

I found it interesting that they used a modified non-turbo 603 intake manifold.

non-turbo 603 intake

so THAT's where I've seen that before. I think it was simply to make connecting to the intercooler easier. The other wild 603 we saw on a different site capped off the normal 603 crossover pipe inlet, and they welded a new inlet on the opposite side, to allow the intercooler to connect on the driver's side.

I still won't give up my AC for a giant intercooler, though... has to be in the wheel well, or across the front spoiler, or something!

:p

Just how large of an intercooler do you consider? I had an intercooler in a previous volvo 760. It was located in front of the radiator. Don't know how much volume it held?

For a small power gain, say 20-25% (a la Mosselman) with the stock turbo, a small intercooler would be fine. These guys are making double or triple the stock power ratings and using double the stock boost pressure, so then need gigantic intercoolers the size of the radiator (see photos in links above). I'm more interested in the modest setup, I'd prefer to retain my 30mpg, and keep the smoke belching to a minimum. :p

I tried to download the link above but my AOL player does nothing! When I try to make QuikeTime my default player it deletes my request! Lately, my PC gives me more things to fix than my MB!

Anyway, wouldn't a Volvo intercooler work, it was as large as the radiator! Just a thought and the junk yards are probably full of them by now!

Also, while thinking about that, there is limited space, you'd have to eliminate the condenser and possibly arrange a fan that moves more air! I would think..

I want one! I wish I could make some more power with my 603. An extra 100 would be nice.

An extra 30-40 should be pretty easy - plumb an intercooler, tweak the IP, just like Mosselman does with his kits for the 124. Bumping a full 100 gain (to 248hp total) would probably take a lot more work & cost - perhaps needing a bigger turbo as well? Any volunteers to experiment? :p

I'd love to tinker with a OM606 engine to make that kind of power...then transplant it into a 190E of an early nineties C-class...now just have to wait oh about 7-10 years to secure the funding nessisary...

btw, anyone know the kind of transmission used in the W201
It would make a perfect compliment to my OM606

Looks like a dogleg 5-speed from a 16V 190.

Yeah - that's the story with a lot of people - myself included. To make it worse, his 124 kit fits Euro engines. We would either need to modify it to work with the USA setup, or encourage him to make a USA kit (just needs a different adapter to replace our USA-only EGR mixer housing). In case you forgot, photos of the USA engine and Euro engine are here - note the intake and exhaust manifold routing is TOTALLY different:
