Need input on 300TD
Here's the deal - a buddy just bought an '85 300TD - Blue on Blue (former service car) for $6,000, 190,000 miles. Exterior and Interior is very clean - cracked dash, but overall nice condition.
Seats - resprung, new struts in rear, Blistiens all around, new rear window motor, top end motor rebuilt (new head/valves), new MB battery, larger 15' rims, new tires, new rotors, new pads, Lormier lower valance, upgraded stereo w/CD changer. Car was pricey for a TD, but the other option was to look for a car around 4-5K out west - fly and drive which would've added another 1K to the whole experience. I think it's a fair deal - thoughts? What to look for? Thanks |

Does he really want a TD???
Hello 718Driver
If he does not like/love/want the car, don't buy it. Getting the wrong car is a sure way to be miserable and wreck a good car. A 300SD is my suggestion, but I am biased because I own one. As to the price of the TD, have a pre purchase inspection done, post a couple of pictures, then we can tell you what it may be worth.

Are you looking to buy it or have already bought it? I paid $1000 for my 1982 300TD with 190K miles about a year ago, but it had a slipping tranny and a broken driver seat spring. The engine blowby also seems excessive. The wagons sell for a premium over the sedans and some claim that 1985 was their best year (mainly due to the better tranny). If all the major systems are in good condition and it is in good cosmetic condition with no rust, $6000 would not be excessive. I have seen them sell for more on eBay. Be sure to have someone check it out before you buy it.
