Global Positioning System (GPS)
Handy little tools!
Can't count on the tach that much...torque converter slips.

Just drove my '82 300TD home today (whew, 10 hours). Fastest I went was probably 85mph, just pegged out the speedo. However, the PO said that he took it up to what he though was around 100mph (based on the tach) before going back to a reasonable speed. He said it still felt like it had a ways to go, too!

What I do know is that 85 feels just fine. It pulls like a train, not changing speed up and down hills at all (yay for torque). Very smooth too, not much noise (sure, noisier than 30mph, but quiet enough for a conversation). I actually scared myself a bit when I got comfortable and was going 80ish in a place where the curves really warranted more like 60. It was just so smooth and furniture-like that I didn't realize how fast I was going! Always a good sign.

Fastest I've ever driven a car was 135mph, of course, it wasn't a diesel, it was a Subaru Impreza RS. Fun little car.. It had a big spoiler wing, but at those speeds if you cracked the sunroof open a notch it lifted the deflector a bit creating another turbulence source, dropping the car an inch or two. Once we hit 120 my friend (who was in the passenger seat), cranked it open a turn, and the car, which was beginning to feel a bit squirrely, felt like it 'dropped', and suddenly felt far more stable, letting us pull up to about 135 before I chickened out and backed us off. Fun stuff!

Peace,
sam

The fastest I've had it is about 100-105. I did drive it this spring from South Beach to Richmond (about 15 hours) non stop cruising at 80-90 during a good portion of the trip. The car did much better than I could have ever hoped.

I have topped out my TD 5 times (Longest was for 3 minutes!) as well as the 300D at work once for a short while. The '83 showed exactly 108mph on the speedo at 4800rpm
