W201 to 2.5 602 5-speed conversion...
Since I cannot seem to find a decent 190D 2.5 manual for sale, I am considering the swap option. Either my current 2.3 gasser/auto, a 2.2 to 2.5, or any combination there of. My question is this; Does ANYONE have a parts book that could list, by M-B PN, ALL the relevent parts (ie Adapter plate, flywheel/clutch/pressure plate/pilot bearing, EXACT tranny numbers, driveshaft numbers/dimensions, pedal assy and linkages. I think you all get the point. This may seem like drastic measures, but it would be a sensible LONG TERM investment. Also, has anyone found a way to be a 5 speed behind a 87 Turbo 2.5 in a 201? If I can get it all gathered up, I can document it all, by pic and writing, for future use. Any thoughts? Thanks Scott PS I know that can be a daunting task at first glance, but SOME has too take the plunge...

Sounds like the hard way to go about things. Better way would be to find a complete car and then do the conversion.
I have a 1986 190D with a manual transmission for sale. Runs and drives strong but is by no means in "mint" condition. Asking $1750, let me know if your interested. Thanks -- dbenz |

![]() Hmm..all the info I have is on the gasoline side of things, but I can see if I can cross-reference anything. I think you'd get better info if you decided on one specific swap. The engine-related parts' PN's will probably differ depending on the year of the engine, and the tranny-related parts' PN's will differ w/ different years as well. If a 5-speed 2.5 Turbo is your goal, I'd recommend chatting up one of the people at a dealer's parts desk to see if there's even a manual trans flywheel/clutch disk/pressure plate available for that engine. I'm guessing that the flywheel off a 2.5 NA should work, but that's just a guess. |

Come on folks......
This can't be that hard, especially if someone else (me) is doing the wrenching to see if it works. Sooner or latert will be worth while, until then, I am willing to give it a shot! So,

Are you planning to buy all the parts from the dealer?
Even if someone had a complete parts list for the conversion (which I seriously doubt that anyone has compiled), how do you plan to get the parts? If you buy them at the dealership, the cost will be astronomical. If you try junkyard shopping, you will most likely never find them all. (after all, the car you are trying to build never existed in the US market.)
How about buying a complete Euro-spec car (Gray Market), and swapping all the parts you need into an existing US spec car? If I'm not mistaken, someone recently was quoting the production numbers for 2.5T / 5 speed cars produced for Europe, and they seemed fairly plentiful, and available over several years. SteveM

there is a transmission that can be mated to the 2.5t engine, and thats a crosworth 5-speed from a 190e 16v motor.
the guys at this site seem to know how to do it: http://www.teamrwd.com/dieselboost/250.php http://www.teamrwd.com/dieselboost/300_24.php http://www.saunalahti.fi/~hecekiel/dieselboost_demo.mpg i know its a crosworth because in the video you can see the stick shift pattern, with 1st where 2nd normally is. the great thing about mercedes is the interchangability between motors and transmissions. you could take a 300sdl motor and mate it to a 16v transmission, if you wanted. (i think thats what they did with the black car). too bad its in finnish or something. but i bet they speak english if you emailed them. as for parts references, mercedes has an online service called startechinfo or something like that. i believe it includes all makes, models, years, parts catalogs, and repair jobs. it is a pain to use but all the info is there. you pay for the online subscription by the day, so have a fast internet connection and a laser printer handy. i cannot find the link by i will post it tomorrow from the garage where i have the link saved. i think it would be really cool to buy a 190e 16v with a blown motors and swap in a turbodiesel. might as well upgrade the turbo like they did too! good luck.

heck that would be cool to put into a 123 or a 116 chassis. If it would fit. to put a turbodiesel with guts into one of the earlier cars.
