For the BoneHeadDoctor....
This question is for the Docotor or anyone who can answer this.
I have an 84' Buick LeSabre with a great running engine, but the body is in terrible shape. I also have a 74' GMC pick-up truck. I am not sure what type of engine is in there. It drinks to much fuel and was thinking of an engine swap with my Buick. Is it possible? Will there be to much hassle? Is it worth it? The 74' pick-up's engines bay is similar to the 84' 6.2 diesel Chevy I have. Love those smileys!!! |

Hmmmmm not sure if the mounts on the Buick engine are the same as the chevy. THe transmission should bolt up but may have a couple not line up. There are slight differences between chevy and BOP belhousings (buick, olds, pontiac). one has a peak at the top center and the other doesn't. But the other bolts line up if memory serves me right. I am sure it can be made to fit. the Buick 455 is a populare big engine swap along with the Caddy 500, because of scarcity of the Chevy 454 and 427 engines for trucks. I can ask a mechanic buddy that would know for sure tomorrow about the mounts.

Heres my question, an 84 Lasabre is likely to have a 305........a gutless wonder, and computer control....are you going to be up to that swap? What engine is it for sure? You truck may just have carb problems causing the fuel consumption.

The 74 chevy is likely to have a 4 bolt main chevy 350. If you have a chevy 305 in your f body buick it will go right in and be an awesome swap. You will be very happy with the power and fuel economy will stay the same. Put your HEI distibutor in the 350. I made many such swaps in the late 80s. Monte carlos, Buick regals and Cutlasses. If you have the 307 in the buick it is an olds motor and an easier swap is an old 350 olds rocket.
my .02 Wodnek On edit I see you want to put the buick engine in the truck... You wouldn't gain anything this way. If you pick up an HEI distributer from a 76 thru 81 chevy small block and put it in your truck you will get a better runining truck that you never have to set the points in however. You can also pick up an early 700r4 transmission from a bone yard and put overdrive in your truck 81-87 model years best for this swap.

You are right about the carburator having problems.. It even ideals high rpms... I think its a Buick 3.8L V6 2 barrel - four-barrel carb, thats a guess Yeah all those wires will be a headace to swap! I hate that, my Mercedes is already giving me a small headace. Problem is I cannot find a 74 anywhere around, not even junk yards. Is there an easy fix to the fuel consumption, or should I just get a new carburator? Will the Buick carb or 6.2 L diesel work? |

The HEI is a High Energy Ignition distributer. Its self contained, only needs a power wire to work. Coild everything is there. WAY WAY better than points. Look at summit or any number of places. Buy a remanufactered carb equal to whats there now, thats the cheapest way. 6.2 could be fitted but its a lot of work to swap all the goodies it needs to work, better off buying a truck already equiped. It has dual bateries, etc. Lots of little stuff makes it impracticle without a parts truck with everything..
