Engine won't shut off with stop lever
I've got a twist on the regular theme. On my car, the engine stops fine with the key - shuts down within a second. Never had a problem there. However, pressing the stop lever makes the engine slow waaaay down, but it won't stop - I've let it go for close to a minute trying to get it to die. I know you have to push the stop lever hard, so I popped the linkage that goes to the ip and pulled on it directly as hard as I could - still won't stop. No other adverse IP symptoms noted (well, my mpg dropped from around 24-25 to 21, but I doubt that's the IP).
Anyone been there done that?

sounds like a linkage problem. Try the stop lever again and look at where it moves the rest of the linkage. Then try to help along the part of the linkage that the stop lever moves. If that stops the engine, then something in your linkage needs adjustment and/or has too much play

i have the same problem
and have tried these two things.
before turning off the car lock the locks. why? i don't know it must be a vaccuum thing. but it works w/o lifting the hood 99% of the time. second i stopped using the button and now push on the linkage. there is more choke that way. |

Thanks for the replies. I don't think it necessarily a linkage issue, because when I disconnect the linkage that runs directly from the stop lever to the IP, and pull on it, it still behaves as described. Also my car (126) has a separate vacuum door lock pump, and therefore doesn't suffer from that problem. Remember, I can shut down fine with the key, its the stop lever that doesn't work.

The stop lever is a panic button. Don't be gentle with it, give it a good slam.

Sounds like your timing is off. When you turn off the key or press the lever you are (advancing or retarding, forgot which) the timing enough to kill the engine. I would check this out, you will have a heck of a time if your vac ever fails..... And dont whack that thing too hard, a gentile press should do it!

Fact:
The engine is continuing to get fuel...
Guesses: #1. Injection pump mechanical linkage damaged, would need to remove IP to check. #2. Leaking injectors, weeping enough to keep it running. #3. Low idle runaway, running off crankcase oil.

Thanks for the replies everyone.
WHunter's diagnosis is along the lines of what I was guessing - except for that low idle runaway bit . I suppose the easiest one to check is the injectors, so I'll start there and let you know. No matter what, sounds like time and money... again.

That is interesting. I would check to see if the motor is running off crankcase fumes like Whunter said. However, this statement:

AH - I was wrong then. I was thinking back to my days of tuning up my grandfathers john deere tractor, I had to replace a fuel seal on the IP. When all was assembled I could not turn it off! it ended up being way out of time and I thought maybe the MBs ran off the same principal. MY bad. (that’s what I get for trying to relate a 60’s American tractor to a german diesel)
