One advantage I can see to an intercooler is not power related at all, but emmisions related. Lowering the intake air temp would help reduce NOx emmisions. The EGR is used specifically for this reason (to cool the cylinder temps and reduce NOx) and with so many putting the EGR is test mode , intercooling could help offset the increased emissions it causes.
